Hi Sarg, spoke to a friend in the trade about these a few weeks ago ref. an enquiry for a s/s 10 bore. They are "working" grade guns i.e. cheap and cheerful, no frills but will do a job, rgds, Mike

Thank you Mike !
Did Zabala make the 8Ga or did one of the English companies rebore & reproof them ?
Is 8 bore still legal to use on Water Fowl in the UK ?

Thanks again !

I think the 8 bore are still legal for hunting in England.
I have a book called "8 bore ammunition"(1985)by Douglas McDougall.
Douglas specialized in reboring 10 bore up to 8 bore (.835") including the Zabalas.
IF you are into 8bore shotguns, the above mentioned book is a must.

Yep 8 bores are legal, but you must use non toxic shot.

Nothing over 10 bore here and of course, non-toxic shot. That's why I sold my over-under Browning 12 an AYA 10 bore. I do wish I still had the AYA. I'd make a ball gun out of it for moose and bear. What a wonderful 'camp gun'.

You wouldent get permission here to shoot deer with an 8 bore and solids. The same goes for the big nitro's. ( because of backstop)

Once you use or possess solid ammunition it becomes by virtue of our firarms act, a section one restricted firearm just the same as a rifle.

You could just about get one on a certificate as a target rifle !!

I incidentaly, have the only 450#2 NE target rifle in London.

So if you have the slug & ball ammo with you in the UK it makes the shotgun into a rifle by law ?
Can factory ammo for the 8Ga be found in England , for shot I mean ?
And I meant if I was to buy one have it sent here then cut down add sights & shoot ball , slugs do you think this is slightly possible or straight out wrong ?
What happens if you are caught shooting Deer with your " Target 450#2NE DB" ?

You have to have a section (1) firarms certificate to posess a cartridge, even a shotgun cartridge having less than 9 projectiles.
Thus if you were in posession of an 8 bore shotgun and a section (1) cartridge for that shotgun, it would be deemed to be a section (1) firearm.

You can get 8 bore shot cartridges in England but it will always be a search and a bit hit and miss.

For a normal certificate holder one can only shoot any particular caliber of rifle on a piece of land if that land is deemed suitible for that caliber by the chief constable of the area.
More experienced hunters may decide if that piece of land is suitible for the caliber without reference to the chief constable. Called an open licence, these are not given out like sweeties.

I hold a dealers licence and may fire or test anything anywhere I deem suitible. So I can test a game rifle by shooting game, irrispective of caliber, subject to the deer act minimum limits.

My 450#2 happens to be my personal gun and held on my privite licence. It is not a caliber that will be given permission of any chief constable for deer, thus it is a target rifle. However I can test it on deer as a dealer.

Regards

Well Bramble...

Once my 10 bore reloading tools are done, my deerhunts will start with 915 grain lead and a fistfull of black
