BARS in Europe?????

On the trail the other day I ran into a kid packing a Browning BAR. Got me thinking...

Anybody use Browning BARS or any other semiauto for hunting in Europe?

At least here in Germany semiautos are legal for hunting although the magazine must not have a capacity of more than two rounds.
Usually they are used on driven hunts for wild boars.

same as denmark, although they are not considered quite kosher for anything but driven hunts, and that is only if your dbl rifle is in for repair.

How 'bout France and Spain? Countries of Eastern Europe?

30-06, 338 win mag, no we dont see that many here, most guys here that buys simi's dont show them at shoots, driven hunts.
for instance you dont show up at a pheasant shoot with a semi shotgun either, it is just not done.

i know the dog handlers in sweden like them alot pigs or bear

Very popular -although frown upon in select parties- in Belgium for drive hunting (often in .300 Win & 9,3x62). However, the magazine must be restricted to 2 ctgs. and may not be removable from the rifle.

We use them down here in SW Sapin, max capacity is 3 rounds I think, I used to use a Ruger.44 carbine for wild boar here but found I couldn't take it to UK or Africa so sold it to my gardener and bought a .44 marlin lever action, shot my bushbuck in Africa with it 3 weeks ago, it has had a trigger job, a special one piece stainless firing pin and is topped with a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5, nice little carbine. rgds

That must be the reason for the sort of odd mag arrangement on the old ones with the floorplate that opened and held the magazine?

I see Browning has all sorts of cobbled-together semi's based on the basice BAR action, now. Some sort of assault-rifle styled. Really weird.

I've never owned one, but have heard many good reports of the older BAR's, specifically accuracy and reliability. Years ago we sold lots in the store in Michigan.

I know one guy (as far as I can remember) up here that has a BAR. It's in .338win if I recall correctly. Other than him, I have not seen anyone using a BAR here in Norway. There are however other semi-autos that are used, such as the increasingly popular Vepr, which is made in Russia.

They are getting more and more common in sweden as to the increasing population of pigs, and the decreasing ability of humans a suppose.

They are pretty popular for driven game hunts in France, particularly the new "Short Track" model. 300WM seems to be a popular cartridge on the hunts I've been on. Though as some of the others hinted at it depends on the hunting group. In general, in the West and South of France the hunting culture is strong with regular farmers and rural people and the hunts are very casual affairs based on the local comune and no one really cares what you shoot with, many old timers are there with their old SxS shotguns rolling out pumpkin balls. So no problem with a BAR or an 'evil black rifle' Remington pump. However, as you get more north and more east the hunting culture becomes more "German" and becomes a thing of urban, high-euro crowd, on "pay to play" basis. Here you see less BARs and the tastes lean towards express rifles rather than autos, pumps and lever guns.

Its funny during my driven boar and deer hunts I've been on in France I've seen more BARs, Remington pump rifles (35 whelan), and lever action rifles (444), than I've ever seen in a lifetime of hunting in the US. In particular the pumprifles... I alway joke with my French hunting buddies that soon they'll need to start wearing Stetsons and Justin Ropers to go along with all those lever guns they shoot.

and Chasseur. Though pumprifles are illegal.
They are (were) frown upon. But since last year one sees some nice looking Benelli Argo and Sauer 203 that looks like a Sauer 202.In my opinion, these 2 rifles are accepted because they look like fine rifles.
Most of the guys are using Mauser-Zastava-FN-CZ rifles, especially the old hunters and the young ones also for they are cheap.
Unfortunately, the most used is the Blaser.

Are you saying pump rifles are now illegal? I know pumpshotguns were illegal, but when did it happen for rifles? I have several friend who use and saw them in use in the 2006-7 season.

In fact You are spot right. One can use a pumprifle (even though I never ever saw one in action) but the pumpshotgun is illegal.
You know more than a Frenchman, that's no minor achievement.

Talking about Bars : in fact Bars look like mean rifle used by happy trigger guys, not discriminative and likely to shoot whatever happens to move about.
Remington, Argo and 203 look less aggresive I think.

Seli-autos are legal and very popular here in Portugal - western Europe - with magazines resctricted to 2 rounds.
BARs in 30-06 and 338WM are among the most seen in drives

Hello 9,3,

yesterday I was participating in a driven game hunt in Bavaria near Ulm.
Open game was wild pigs (with the exeption of animals with piglets), roe deer (no bucks), foxes and hares.

I saw quite some BARs (five or six? most of them in 30-06), one Heckler&Koch Model 770 in .308 Win. and one Hecker & Koch Mod. 940 in 30-06.

I have a H&K Mod 770 in .308 Win, but yesterday I preferred my 98 in 8x57IS.

I haven´t seen many on driven hunts here so far.

Having the front sight illuminated by an LED is realy an advantage...
some folks say, it works better than an Aimpoint ...
