Went for a wander 'down the track' last weekend looking for buff and boar, with the main aim of getting Marty a shot at a buffalo with his newly-acquired Sako 'Hunter' .375.

The wind was variable, sometimes gusty, and a general pain in the butt, but we persevered and finally found a dozen animals feeding in a dry watercourse mid-afternoon.

Unfortunately Marty was on the wrong side of the creekline, which put him upwind, so I glassed the mob and decided that a big barren cow had the best headgear. I determined to try for a shot at her if the custard hit the fan prematurely!

Sure enough, they caught Marty's scent before he could get in position for a shot. As they ran past me the big cow offered an opportunity so I put in the first barrel from the .400 Jeffery. A little far back for the shoulder, it was a perfect lung shot and stopped the animal in its tracks while the others cleared the area. A quick finisher knocked her over for good.

Marty's disappointment didn't last long: less than a kilometre further up the creek, he jumped a big boar from a hidden wallow and flattened it with one shot from the Sako. Tough buggers, our dry hill-country boars: the 300gr bullet didn't exit!

Waterfowl only this weekend, but if the early storms allow it, we have another 'expedition' planned in a week's time!

Great story mate,
Hope the serious rain holds off for a month more we'll see eh?
Did the buff end up as sausages?

Regards,

MOG

Very nice, I wish I could hunt like that on the weekends, unfortunately the game just isn't here for it, or the vast tracks of land.

Marrakai,

Very nice! No second prize here - both rank at the top of their class.

Good hunting!
