Anyone hunted with a Marlin 45/70 guide gun
      #11707 - 17/03/04 11:00 AM

Since I've had my guide gun for a few years now I haven't had the chance to take it hunting. So any of you hunted with one? What did you shoot with it, and how did it do?

Not exactly a Guide Gun but I have carried a 45-70 Marlin with a 2x scope as a saddle gun for many years. I have used it on a couple of Deer and as a backup on 3 Grizzlies. Very effective for the purpose I use it for.

I have never used any of the new super bullets that turn it into an Elephant rifle however and doubt that I ever will.

Sounds like it's a pretty good back up. I carry mine on my backpak and like the fack that it's not real long. I don't like catching a long rifle on a branch while climping and rolling back down the hill....ouch! I just haven't had the chance to use it on anything except for the occasional charging chipmunk, man those suckers are mean

Can't say I use a guide gun, but I use 1895 in 45/70, Its taken quite a few pigs, real handy in scrub country, I cast my own projectiles for it, they seam to hit pretty hard and do the job well

Buckeyeshooter:
Where did you go hunting, West Virgina or in those areas? What part of Ohio are you from? I'm guessing that you didn't have any trouble with "stopping power"

My mom's side of the family is from Clearfield county PA. and I now own the family farm near Ashland KY. (dad's side of the family).
I live in Columbus, home of the Buckeyes!!

Stopping power has not been an issue. Needless to say-- I am not overly impressed with Ohio's shotgun season. I usually hunt KY. where you can legally take 2 deer during gun season, then maybe I buy an Ohio tag. I have been hunting in Pa for years also. Although these days only for black bear. The deer heard there has been mismanaged for years and they are just now getting it back in order through use of altler and sex restrictions.

Scartozi,

I use the 22" 45/70 with a leupold 2.5x comapct on it. Works great for pigs and I get good results with 405 rems and 405 woodleigh's.
