.450 Rigby Rimless Magnum
      #11679 - 17/03/04 12:09 AM

There is always discussion about the Lott but I was wondering about the 450 Rigby. How do the two compare ballistically? I am going to assume it is just a 416 Rigby blown out to accept the bigger bullet or is it a seperate animal all together? I remember seeing an article on this cartidrige but that has been several years ago and I don't read much about it anymore. I am always thinking about having something built and this is one I have thought of, so any info would be great. Thanks, Bruce

As you say, it is a 416 necked up to 458. I know of several shooters who like it. It does what the Lott does but with slightly pressure because of the difference in powder capacity. If your shoulder can stand it, you can drive it up to 2700 with a 500 gr bullet. I think the niche it will have will be to drive 600 gr bullets to a safe pressured 2400 without powder compression.

475guy,

Sorry to burst your bubble but you will not get a 500 grain bullet to 2700 fps with a 450 Rigby at anywhere near safe operating pressures.

The 450 Rigby is essentially the same cartridge as a 450 Dakota and is slightly larger than a 460 Weatherby (by about a grain of water). Loaded in the mid 50 ksi range it will provide you a muzzle velocity around 2400 fps with most 500 grain bullets. Loaded to low 60 ksi range the muzzle velocity will be around 2480 fps with most 500 grain bullets. Loaded to 70 ksi you will get a muzzle velocity around 2600 fps with most 500 grain bullets. Loaded till the bolt blows out the rear of the rifle you will get a muzzle velocity, which is probably a bit more than 2600 fps with a 500 grain bullet, but I sure as hell don't want to find out what is it actually is!

The Rigby is factory loaded to around 50 ksi and achieves a muzzle velocity of 2350 fps with a 500gr Woodleigh. I personally see no need to improve on that!

Scott

So how does the .450 Ackley compare to the .450 Rigby and the .458 Lott? Does one have any advantages over the other?

I use a .450 Rigby for backing up and hunting of dangerous game. In my opinion, the difference between it and the Ackley/ Lott, is that it can actually acieve the velocities at a safe pressure. When hunting in extreme tempratures, like the Zambezi Valley in October, pressure stays low. I have regularly used a load that propells a 500gr. Rhino bullet ( semi monolithic/ solid shank bullet simmelar to Trophy bonded Bearclaw) at 2400 ft/sec. in weather so hot that a Ackley loaded to 2300 jammed. On one occation, during a midday break from tracking buffalo, I extracted the bullet that I carried in the chamber, and it was too hot to close my hand on. I have fired simmelar hot loads, with no ill effects. I agree that its main advantage propably lies in the use of 600gr. bullets, and that is why I now load 600gr. bullets at 2300ft/sec.
