DJ,

Do you mean the Demas-Azur triple underhook system since Demas was bought out by VC a few years ago? Or some of the VC line of single trigger SxS and their modern O/U rifles?

Demas rifles are very well made, better than Chapuis in my opinion. They have a nice custom shop back action hammer gun that is beautiful, but expensive!

Yes, I did mean the Demas-Azur triple underhook system. It's a beautiful rifle. Griffin & Howe sells a Continental double rifle under the G&H name, but manufactured by VC. I haven't seen a review or any shared experiences with that rifle on this forum. It's a bit out of my price range. If I were to buy a double rifle, it would have to be at the 12k range at the upper end.

Check out the Griffin & Howe website.

Thanks Chris!

It was ranged right at 99yds across a steep canyon and quartering slightly toward - it turned out more so than I thought.

The shot entered right about the left 5th rib and angled backwards, through both lungs, through the top of the rumen, and exited mid abdominal wall. Call it roughly 36" of travel.

The moose swapped ends, ran about 30yds, and fell over.

This is the third moose I've shot and the easiest one yet. On the way over to it I discovered there was a two-track in the bottom of the canyon. Post-gutting three good shoves landed it on the road.

This is the kind of stuff we were hunting:

btw, the landowner who's property I was on pretty much thought I was on crack
He takes one look and bellows out: "What the Hell is that !?"

Those Azur are wonderful rifles, you can customize them to your liking. I've handled quite a few, but not shot any yet... From my French hunting buddies they feel quality is higher than with Chapuis. The designer of the Azur was part of the group that designed the Chapuis double underhook system, the UGEX way back. He left Chapuis supposedly because of disagreements about quality control and went on to help design the Azur. I've spoken on the phone with him a few times.

UtahLefty,

wow--that is some really nice looking wood on your double---looks like an awesome rifle..congrats..

Agree with your assessement--think the HEYM is the best of the ones mentioned...but also about 5K more than the Merkels and Krieghoffs...

Given the choice and all things being equal--still would take the Heym...

india,

how soon do you need a rifle? i have two for your consideration - brand new in the box merkel
500-3" extractor rifle with scroll engraving . list price $12,000.00 your cost $7,950 while they last. i don't know if the triggers could be switched for a left hand shooter.

a searcy 470 african hunter model with nice engraving. reconditioned to about 98 % - some traces of use can be found if you look every hard.
this is a right hand rifle but i know searcy rifles can have the triggers swapped for lefties.

this is an ejector rifle offered at $11,000 ono. priced thousands below replacement, ready to hunt and without a years wait ! contact me for pictures of either

...part of the reason so many African Professionals shoot the Krieghoffs is that Krieghoff offers them to the PH's at a VERY reduced price...about half of what you or I would pay...for this very reason--people see the PH with a Krieghoff and wow, another sale is made.

Interesting but maybe not true... I´m a South African PH since 1986 - I didn´t get a "very reduced price". Krieghoff knew that I´m a PH, there was not reduction in price whatsoever. Had to pay the full price for my Classic Big Five!

Duckworth, Jösch, Daffner, Dedekind, Katzke, Vermaark, Ochsenbein, Greef, Loubser, Thormallen, Prinsloo, Dorrington. Do you really believe these PHs are using a Krieghoff double barrel because they got a huge discount? There must be another reason...

`African Outfitter´ October/November 2008 p. 8: `Around the campfire with PH Geoff Wainwright´: ..."And as I couldn´t afford the best in English doubles........, I opted for the next best affordable weapon - a German double in Krieghoff .470. To this day this rifle serves me well when hunting elephant, buffalo and cats."

It is true, more and more P.H. use the krieghoff double rifles in africa.
