Rebated rim and DR
      #115884 - 30/09/08 06:07 AM

Hi,

I was reading an article about double rifles recently, and in the caliber section the classic .425WR was mentioned as potent choice.
Taylor, too, wrote that he would have been more than happy with two guns: a bolt in .425WR and a double similarly chambered.

Now, we all know that the flanged (rimmed) cartridges are the best option for doubles due to easy extraction. If the case is not rimmed, then extraction can be a problem and many a device has been introduced to overcome this problem.
Furthermore, the rebated rim seems to be a difficult design even in a bolt gun, and thus it occurred to me how bad a solution a cartridge with a rebated rim would actually be in a double?

It appears to me that the rebated rim would have all the same downsides as a non-rimmed case has times two, as even some sort of spring-operated "nail" would have to come high up, indeed, to catch the rebated rim.

Any views/comments/experiences?
I'd love to see a photo of the extractor or ejector of a double chambered in a rebated rim cartridge.
Also, Taylor wrote that WR's patented extractor claw for the non-rimmed is every bit as good and reliable as the solutions for a rimmed cartridge. Does anyone have a photo of said WR system?

the onle problem for the rebated rim case in a bolt gun is the zick-zack magazin. the cartridge move in three dimension's when pushing forward and there will be a situation where the bolt can slip over the case head. this do not happen with a single row magazin!

The cartridge was introsuced in 1909 with the idea of replaceing the 450bore in India. The cartridge worked pritty well in Mauser 98 rifles, and WR made a few double rifles for the cartridge as well, but the rebated rim presented problems in the doubles, so was dropped there, but was made for some time in the Mauser.

I can't think of a poorer choice for a double rifle, than a rebated rim cartridge! You will notice that you don't see many of the WR doubles today chambered for that cartridge. I'd say there is a reason for that fact. Most of the ones chambered that way were rebuilt to something else, and Westley Richards discontinued that chambering in their double rifles in short order. The cartridge lasted longer in bolt rifles.

Schaukis,

One of Christopher Austyn's books (I can;t remember which one right now but he wrote just three, I think) references the Westley Richards guns and talks about Taylor's appreciation of them. You might find these at your local library or if any member at your gun club has copies that he would permit you to look at.

Good hunting!
