Anyone heard of Waffen Velser?
      #115865 - 30/09/08 01:49 AM

Received a link to their website from a friend in Europe. Their metal work and case hardening seems really nice but the wood used on their rifles looks somewhat plain. Maybe that is intentional . . .

Was just wondering if someone had heard about them or had any experience with their products.

Good hunting, everyone!

Hello Mehul,

a while ago I read an article about a "Velser" rifle test.
The rifle got good marks and was not expensive.
If you need details, I will have to search the magazine, but I will find it!

best regards
Rolf

I was looking at the pictures in the gallery area and came across this one, could somebody explain to me how the hell this is supposed to work?

Mehul,

As I understand it, Europeans (at least in the past) preferred straight grain, rather plain stocks. It had something to do with the thought that wood with all the fiddle back and quilting was considered "diseased" and prone to breakage or cracking, or that the wood was generally weaker than straight grained wood. Today I think that view is changing for the common Joe in Europe. I don't know for sure, as this was what was explained to me by an older American gunsmith, but figured I'd throw it out there. Maybe one of the guys from Europe will confirm or deny...

BTW, e-mail sent about that barrel blank...

I must say that its a very good thing they dont build rifles as they do websites in germany.

I think the streight grain is a way to withstand recoil and perhaps not as prone to twist under humidity.

It's a barrel direction indicator. That way you'll always know which way your barrel is pointing.

Seriously, I saw a similar thing done on a prewar American sporting rifle and the first thing that occurred to me was how much effect that big steel barrel had on the accuracy of the compass. I'd hate to be lost and hungry, thinking I was walking back to the road... following my compass

Rolf,

Thanks for the information. No rush at all, but if you do find the article, I shall be grateful. These days I practice reading Deutsch and trying to recall my Grundstufe 1 und 2 from more than 35 years ago when I read German catalogues.

Thanks in advance and very good hunting!

Tim,

Just replied to your e-mail. Sorry for the delay.

I still have a large old library of books on guns that I collected from the early 70s until the end of the 90s in India and every time I read something like this here, I feel the need to go there and ship it over here.

Yes, I have read what you say in several old books and remember John Amber severely criticise German gunmakers in one of his pieces for the quality of wood that they use as well as for the quality of chequering which he felt was unfortunate considering the overall superb quality of their guns. That said, these days, the Germans and Austrians do use some of the finest wood in the world on their guns and I was mroe than a little surprised to see the very plain wood on the Velser rifles. It must be a function thing . . .

Good hunting!

Mehul,

Got the e-mail. I'll try and send the blank out this weekend, as I have to ship my son's Tikka out to him in time for deer season (his first). Hopefully his step dad and him will be successful...

As for me...antelope in two weeks up in Montana...

Tim,

Sorry, I got caught up in some crazy work and replied only two days ago. Hope your son enjoys his hunt - do get him to post pictures here. And good hunting, of course, to both of you. It is always great when the young begin to hunt. I always recall my days as a boy in that era when Moses wore shorts.
