My new working double
      #115617 - 27/09/08 04:28 AM

Finally my new double arrived ! I had put an ad in a German hunting magazine ("Looking for a double rifle in .500 N.E., maybe .470 N.E. or 450 3 1/4" N.E., offer anything but Krieghoff ") and got some respond with ridiculous price expectations (45.000 Euros for a Ferlach double). After a few weeks a master gunsmith called me and told me he would sell his masterpiece, which he had to build for his master exam. I visited him and had a thorough look at the rifle. I intstantly knew that this is what I was looking for. The double is based on a Heym action with hammer-forged Heym barrels but was not blued yet. We went to the shooting range and I was not satisfied with the regulation, so I asked him to regulate it again, which he did several times until I gave my OK. I wanted a Recknagel rear sight mounted forward as far as possible and also I decided against any engravings, since my opinion is that no engravings are better than bad ones and I just cannot afford the really nice ones. As a finish I choose some high-tech black matte nitration, which should be much more durable than either blueing or colour case hardening.
After everything was as I wished I happily paid the price which was quite fair compared to other quality doubles. Of course I went to the shooting range as soon as possible and test fired a few rounds at 50 meters, Federal factory ammo with Woodleigh soft nose bullets as the gun had been regulated with that ammo regarding my wishes.
The first two shots were 18mm apart, the second two 22mm, which is excellent in my opinion.
The caliber is .470 N.E., the barrels are 61cm long, the double has cocking indicators and ejectors as a DG rifle should have. The trigger pull is just fine due to the excellent construction of the Heym modified Blitz locks, an internal safety prevents double or accidental discharges.
Of course this is not a impressing double to show off but I hope it will serve me well on as many buffalo hunts as possible !

I'm impressed! Just what I'm looking for as a matter of fact. Want a double for elephants. .470 is perfect. I wish it was available in US. All business rifle, I like it.

Kalunga,

Very, very nice! A sleek rifle that is finished so that you could take her out hunting and without any fear of marring a delicate finish. A true using gun!

Good hunting!

I'm a greater fan of "plain" rifles, doubles included, I tend to the beauty in action school of thought & have never felt the need for acres of ornate engraving. Not knocking anyone elses likes or desires, thats simply what works for me. I think this particular rifle & the later offering from Heym & Searcy in their PH & more workaday styles are just great. This rifle is very much what I had in my minds eye years ago when I was in H&H in London looking (drooling) at a display of BG rifles. A chappy in dark jacket & pinstripe pants wandered up & asked if he could help "sir", sir being in jeans & fleece jacket. He was very polite up till the time I asked if it was possible to get rifles like these but without the engraving. At that point I got the sort of look usually reserved for child molesters & the conversation was promptly albeit very politely ended as he spotted obviously more promising quarry. Kalunga, I think what you have there is just great.

Very interesting. And very durable if it's the same kind of thing as done with Blaser rifles.

Congratulations with your new excellent rifle.

I think that is a great rifle. I have been looking at some that are just cooler case hardened and no engraving.

I think that rear sight makes a lot of sense,in it's use, in not hideing the target, but IMO it is simply too fragile on a working DGR double rifle! Maybe if it were thicker to resist bending? My suggestion is to cut a solid rear sight exactly the same but without the large openings in the blade as a replacement in case that one gets bent!

DUGABOY1, yes I know that the Recknagel rear sight might be more fragile than a more solid version, but it is made from 4mm thick steel and should take some pounding, at least more than the front sight for sure. But I agree that taking along a spare sight set is a very good idea.
