Savage 99 makeover

Fellas,

I know this is off topic for many: the Savage 99. (but historically it has slain a few big ones)
I have a post WW1 (1925) take down with factory new T/D 250 barrel but missing the pistol grip stock and fore-end. Suggestions on a refurb (incl new rear sight) restock and QD scope mounts in the Fraser style most welcome. (No I don't want to use Stith mounts, integral bases with Talley rings are the preferred option.)

Hey Kamilaroi,

No rifle, or for that matter, shotgun, handgun, cannon etc is off topic here. What is definitely wrong of you is that you didn't post a picture of your rifle.

Before and after pics as you work on mounting a scope are, of course, most welcome. As would be pictures of any game taken . . . you get my drift, I'm sure.

In any case, in the strictest interests of seeing some nice hunting pics here, let me wish you good hunting!

Thank you and no intent to offend but;

All I have is a 99 action minus rotor, screw and sundries. But I do have an unused factory barrel in original grease and a nice piece of Roger Vardy's walnut circa 1995. So I don't think it worthwhile to post for the present.

A mate of mine (Vettore Scapinello) is doing the work but I also have 3 of Westley's (1897 patent) falling blocks, a Jeffrey 404 aka lotsa$ and a restock of an Alex Henry falling block to have done so it'll be a protracted process.

Vettore has done a few square bridge mounts for 99s so I'll try to get a few shots up of those.

Meanwhile (cheap plug here) the "odd man out" WR in new barrel 375 H&H flanged (with new wood) will be for sale next year (cased and engraved). The other 2 are near sequentially numbered as ledger entries 35350 and 35352. Wal Winfer can attest to their authenticity if needs be. This pair will too be offered for sale as "extra finish" with matching wood (C25 contract cut abt 1982).

If Nitrox or others have a copy of the early "Guns and Game" they might scan and post showing Vettore's work. (Mine is the 22rf Martini)

Promise to get a few pics of others incl hunting and post in due course. If I can get some time off for banteng and sambhur next year then it's first off the blocks.

Inletted "drop in" stocks and forends are available for the M99. Boyds is one source.

Thanks mate,

I saw them through 24HR site but I already have the wood (exhibition) and Geoff Slee can head it up for me, Vettore doing the fine bits. I don't care for the standard stock thus my request for some ideas a la Fraser (as if Fraser did their own work as many did with Mausers etc).

No offense at all. Just post the pics whenever you find time. The 99s are absolutley beautiful guns and this is your chance to make us drool here.

From your description this sounds like a splendid rifle in the making and of many great hunts in the years to come.

And designed and made by an expat Pommy cattle station owner too (Arthur Savage was up north in OZ for a number of years before going to US). Apparently Savage have a prototype big enough to handle medium size (30-06 etc) ready to roll. I wish!
