Customised Mannlicher photos.
      #114320 - 13/09/08 12:30 PM

Here are a couple of photos of my recently completed model 1950 MS rifle in 9.3x62. The photos are a bit crappy but will give you an idea. I wanted to emulate the British stock style and am very happy with the results. None of the work is mine, I just supplied the ideas and the $$$!!

The checkering is flat top style. The scope is a modern 2-7x Kahles.

Tomorrow we are going hunting so the next photos might be with some game.

Hope you like it - I do.

Cheers.

GG

Thanks Ben - it came up a treat alright. I love sending a blank off to the stockmaker and then waiting to see how the stock turns out. This one exceeded my expectations for sure.

Very nice work indeed... elegant simplicity of line!

Who was the stockmaker?
Are those Recknagel mounts?

All the best for the hunt!

Was this beautiful rifle always a 9.3x62?
I love it!

Guys

Thanks for the compliments - I'm glad you like her.

The story on this one is - I found her tucked away in a rack at William Evans in London last year. She is an original 9.3x62 and had hardly been used judgeing by the excellent condition of the bore. A model 1950 made in '52. Anyway I bought it there and then. When I got back to OZ I organised the export thru Richard Whitely. En route from William Evans to the exporters the stock was broken in the mail! To cut a long story short I spoke with William Evans and suggested that if they were prepared to pay for the exporting I would take the rifle as is and have it restocked here in OZ. They were happy to do this.

The mounts are EAW and were imported by Graeme Spraggon for me. Bob de Vries did the fitting of mounts and scope and the blue job. Geoff Slee did the stock which was a blank I bought from Denli in Turkey a few years ago.

Just got in from a morning in the bush. Dropped 7 brumby's with the 9.3 - very effective. My 13 year old dropped another 6 with my old mannlicher .270 and also had a shot with the 9.3 and reckons he might use it next time..........yeah right!!

Cheers.

GG

Very nice! I especially like the stock design. What are the dimensions, particularly the length of the fore end (from the front action screw), LOP and drop at heel?

Hi Carpetsahib

Sorry for late reply.

The LOP is 14.5"
Drop at Comb is 13.5mm from centre of bore
Drop at heel is 30mm from centre of bore
Length of forearm is 200mm or 8"

At least these are the dimensions I asked for - I haven't measured the finished product. I tried to copy the dimensions of the stock on my Brno Mod 21.

Hope this helps.

GG

Here are a couple of photos of rifles I built. Top is a Mauser M98 built on a Westley Richards pattern. The wood is a good grade of American walnut that has been stained with nitric acid and finished with alkanet oil of my own manufacture. The Mannlicher is a model 1956 in .30-06 and sports a reworked factory stock with a Winchester Steel Butt Plate, steel grip cap and ebony forend. This, too, has a modified Westley Richards pattern stock. The second photo shows the light engraving that has been applied to the bottom metal of the Mannlicher.

Cheers.

GG I have just bought two MSs. 1st is a 1903 mdl in 8mm the second is a 1905 in 9mm. Both are takedowns. With my old eyes I'd like to mount a scope on them. Where did you buy your mounts? Thanks.

carpetsahib, the stock on that westley patent is real nice i especially like the grip area something that some stock makers dont get right, the alkinet root oil is a beautiful thing i had some fermenting in a bottle for about 10 years , george caswell did sell it at one time, it is probably the most authentic finish but it does not show up as the color that we all like right away it takes some time . i built a 458. in much like the pattern of your westley style rifle very plain i,m working on getting pics posted of some of my stuff ...paul

I'm in Ozzieland so where I sourced mine won't be relevant to you. I can tell you they are made by EAW and your best bet is probably going to be NECG (New England Custom Guns). They have to be fitted by someone who knows what they are doing but you have Martini & Hagn up your way somewhere and they would be able to do it no worries. NECG could also fit them. They are not a cheap option tho.

Cheers.

Thanks, Paul. I really like the WR pattern. It handles exceptionally well and handles recoil very well. I am anxious to see photos of your work - hope that they are arriving soon.

GG, With the claw mounts, does the scope come up well and not too high?

Adam

It's fine for me - a few years ago I wouldn't have considered anything but a dead straight american classic shaped stock but I am finding I quite like the "heads up" position of a scoped rifle with a bit of drop at heel these days!

Mind you I've got a longish face and I tend to be able to adapt instantly from one rifle to another which probably helps matters.

Cheers.
