Bowhunting question!!!
      #113482 - 03/09/08 09:49 PM

Can the type arrow used prevent deer from "jumping the string??

Spoke with a RABID bowhunter who gave me some interesting info---

He thinks that when bucks "jump the string" in response to the shot that they are hearing the arrow in flight!
Even more than any bowstring sound!!

He learned this by shooting arrow over a friends dog who would jump and try to bite the arrows. The speed of the dogs response with his High country sniper bow(very quiet) was no different from a loud unicam.

He is trying different types of arrows to see if some a quieter in flight!! Less deer reaction--less wounded game. Neat!!

Has anyone noticed a difference with carbon vs aluminum arrows??

I am interested as I will be stalking doe with my crossbow soon. I may want to try carbon arrows if they are quieter in flight!!

I've not had a problem with animals jumping the string from my big and slow longbows and recurves, and heavy arrows. However, I've not hunted deer or antelope, just an assortment of Aussie feral game.

Here are some tips to make sure your arrow and bow are as quiet as possible:

- Use solid broadheads if you're worried, as vented ones tend to make more noise (probably my least important tip, as tens of thousands of animals are taken each year with these broadheads without the animal jumping until it's through them).
- Make sure your vanes or feathers are in good condition.
- Use a heavier arrow (this will absorb some of the bow's noise).
- Shoot animals under 30 metres, preferably under 25 metres - even with a compound with all the bells and whistles.
- Don't shoot unless the animal is relaxed and not suspicious.
- If using a compound, fit noise suppressors / dampeners to it; if using a traditional bow, put fur or wool string silencers on the string - any archery shop will have heaps of silencing options, especially for compound bows.
- Most importantly, don't worry too much about noise after you've addressed the above points - just hunt hard!

I haven't noticed a difference in carbon and aluminium, because they both end-up weighing the same for me. Maybe I'm deaf (too many tractors and rifles growing up on the farm), but the bows and arrows (whether aluminium, carbon, wood) seem quiet to me, and to the game I hunt.

I hope some of that was of assistance!

All the best to you in the coming deer season!

Regards,

Ben

Ben,

Thanks for the pearls!!

Still it would be interesting to know what the DEER HEAR in addition to what we hear. What sounds/frequencies does an arrow make? Wonder how it sounds approaching the deer?

I shoot an expandable broadhead at around 325 fps from the crossbow.I have few deer to my credit with it( only 2)but love stalking and shooting!!In my very limited experience the doe shot farther away (40 yd distance) tended to react less than the closer one.Since sound travels faster than the arrow you would expect the animal could react sooner at longer range-- Interesting!!

Hoppdoc,

I have been bowhunting for the better part of 35 years...have been fairly successful on whitetail, elk and mule deer..can only think of one time I had a game animal jump my string..longer shot on a elk back in the late '80's..she was already hit lethaly..got up on her again..she jumped at my shot..hit her in the hind quarter..still got her..but took a bit of tracking..other than that...no problems..

I do agree, it seems if they are on to you, they seem to move quicker on the close shots than on the farther away shots..my only guess is on the farther ones they might be a little more inquisitive and perhaps the sound is not as loud to them..I do believe they can hear the arrow...have had arrows go past myself at a little distance when shooting with friends...if the human ear can hear them..the animals can with much greater ease...

Lately have been using an expandable called the "steelhead" in 100 gr..flies awesome and is very lethal...some friends did a penetration test last winter--they work at one of the local archery shops..the Steelhead outpenetrated all the expandables tested as well as most of the fixed...They say if you bow is tuned correctly you should be able to shoot any broadhead..I have shot most but have never experienced the accuracy I am getting with these...

I have tested the sound issue and done it in a very safe way. An archer friend set a target off to the side of a very large tree. Myself and another stood behind the trunk out of range of arrows while the friend shot arrows from varying distances (using a compound bow). The further away he was from the target the more sonic the arrow sounded and the less you could hear the string until at one point you could not hear the bow itself but only the arrow in flight. It is quite loud.

As implausible as it sounds, I believe that under certain circumstances of angle, distance and arrow speed, the animals can see the arrow in flight coming towards them, especially if they are alert to your presence, even if they have not actually made you out. I've also seen video footage (in slow motion) of an elk that clearly drops as if to make a fast get-away with his eyes firmly fixed on the arrow coming towards him all the way into its chest. His head clearly follows the arrow as it closes in.

So the question is--how do I determine what arrow is quiter?? The bow certainly is loud--

I'm thinking that the deer doesn't hear the Bow as much as the distance gets farther--just primarily the arrow.

The deer has ??how long to react at 40 yds??

Maybe the arrow that flies most like a fieldtip is the "quietest"?

Hopp-

I believe the faster your bow the louder the sound will be and even louder if you add long distance. I have never had any animal jump an arrow or 'string' at 20 yards or less. I would not worry about broadheads making noise. Rather make sure you have one that is going to cut as effectively as possible.

Agree totally with the above---as to types of broadheads--I feel there is not a lot of difference in noice from a fixed to a mechanical..however in a lot of cases the mechanical may provide a bit more accuracy..which has been my experience...however when I move to bigger game..ie; elk or bear..I use a fixed broadhead...my shots will be closer and I like the comfort of the fixed head..

Ripp et al---

I use an expandable called a Trophy Ridge "steelhead" which opens on impact but flies like a fieldtip. These seem to make decent entry wounds. Is this your "steelhead" as well?"Razor" and "Trophy Ridge" both have a steelhead broadhead.I tried fixed broadheads but they tended to "plane" and were not as reproducibly accurate.

I may try an expandable called the "razor" as it has no rubber band holding the blades forward. It says it will open on impact but one wonders--

Any recommendations on expandables??

Hoppdoc,

the STEELHEAD I use is very similar--and also very similarily shaped however the tip is one solid piece versus the attached portion on yours..

FYI...Have not heard such good things for the "razor'...but as so many elude too..everyone likes different things...

I am kind of a creature of habit--if something works and works well I usually don't change until someone or something can show me why I should...the expandables have worked very well for both myself and my "GANG" of bowhunters I hang around with..between the group there has been probably 15 plus head of elk to hit the ground in the last few years..and all with expandables...I was a HUGE non-believer at first---but now a convert...

Love my crossbow--economy of motion, real performance with less external movement to attract attention prior to shooting--

If anyone else shoots a crossbow- a pearl-"BE CAREFUL" with your support hand supporting/stabilizing the bow. If your thumb is too high and inside the bowstring you can injure that thumb to the point amputation might be considered!!
Ugly accidents can happen!

Keep that thumb out of harms way!!

My Dad did that with a brand-new Wham-O Wrist Rocket Slingshot he gave me for my 12th birthday.
He was shooting it at a dogfish in a side ditch in February in Northern Indiana the day I got it...
Whacked himself in the thumbnail with a marble, he'd pulled it 'way back.
I had to wade the ditch to get the slingshot back after he pitched it in the drink.
I learned a few new words that day too.
2-3 days later, his thumbnail fell off.
I sure miss him.
