Question for Bramble
      #113470 - 03/09/08 07:48 PM

Bramble

I saw in a post about lever actions that you shot some game with a 450 No2.

As a 450 No2 user I am curious as to what kind of 450 No2 you have and what loads you used.

I built the 450#2 myself on a Spanish action. There is a long thread regarding its construction in the Building DR forum in 2007.

I'm the hansome fellow in the photos, the ugly bearded one is my mate Jaco (S A Hunt) Regardt Du Plessis is the young pin up boy on the right Also a friend and both are damm good hunters.
The loads are 480 Grain Woodleigh softs and solids over 112.5 of H4831 (long cut) for 2160 fps.

She has acounted for 2 Wildebeest and 2 Warthog. The performance on the WB I would rate as excellent. Though they have a reputation for being tough and in the same trip 2 were lost to other hunters, neither of mine travelled further than their own length with heart/lung shots. It simpley knocked their legs out from under them. The expanded bullet photo was the only one recovered. WB was facing slightly quatering. It entered the chest at the front and was cut out of the rear hip area.
I rate it as a great caliber, never a sign of pressure and very accurate. The first WH was taken at 70-90 yards in fading light off sticks and the second at 90ish offhand,

What do you have ??

Regards

Bramble, I like that gun.

I really enjoy gun lore and gun projects, except I have no skill or technical know-how like you do. Your project was one of the best I've read about, and obviously produces the goods!

Yes I remember reading the thread about the building of your rifle now.

I have a British Edwinson Green and Sons 450 No2.

He either got the action and barrels from WJ Jeffery or had Jeffery's maker build the gun for him.

Edwinson Green was mainly a shotgun maker, but I have seen other double rifles with his name on them.

My rifle has 28" bbbls.

The 450 No2 is a great calibre, one of the best Nitro calibres IMHO.

I have killed several deer and pigs with 350gr Hornaday RN bullets over 81gr of IMR 3031, with filler, either dacron or foam.

When in Africa I use 480 Woodleigh Softs and Solids, and 500gr Swift A Frames over 88gr of RL-15, and 450gr North Fork Flat Point and Cup Point Solids over 89 gr of RL 15, all loads with filler of course.
