Gentlemens:

This rifle is to be an International Rules Creedmoor rifle, basically a black powder cartridge rifle weighing 13 pounds for competition at 800, 900 and 1K yards. The action is Steve Earle's reproduction of the Frank Wesson #1 Long Range action that has been reshaped to what is hoped to be a more elegant look. The barrel is a Green Mountain .45 caliber with a 1 in 16" twist and is 34" long. The stock is of American black walnut with skeleton butt plate and grip cap of damascus steel. The sights will be the Distant Thunder rear tang sight and globe front sight.

The rifle was specifically built for the WCA Creedmoor match in Lodi, Wisconsin this September and was supposed to be done six months ago. Imagine that.

In any event, it nears completion. The action is at the engraver's and all that remains upon its return is to assemble all the pieces and time and blue the screws. Hopefully this will all be done in time for the Lodi match...

Gentlemens:

Thank you for all the kind words. They are much appreciated.

Here are some amateurish pictures of the partially completed engraving by Mr. Ken Hurst. All the scroll work is done and now Mr. Hurst is working on the game scenes. I hope y'all have a high speed connection...

Thank you all again for the kind words. When Mr. Hurst is done scratching on the rifle is going to be a thing of beauty. The good news is that he told me the work will be done this week. It is starting to look like it will be done in time for the match. I won't have much time for load work, but shucks, that is over rated anyway...

Mr. SharpsNitro:

That be genuine gold plating on the lockwork. It looks a little different in person.

Mr. sbs470:

I will bring extra ammunition. As a matter of fact I am not going to be able to get to Lodi until sometime Monday, and so will be sending the rifle there with someone else to shoot over the chronograph and perhaps even to get sight settings at Monday's practice session.

Regards to all,

Glenn

Glenn,

What a magnificent rifle! I shall be volunteering at Lodi this year and shall be one of the many droolers over this masterpiece.

Immaculate!

Hey Glen,

Am I allowed to say, "hell of a rifle!" Evey facet is just top drawer. I am dying to ask, how much imput did you have on the engraving? It absolutely melts to the gun like a sweater on Marylin Monroe.

Dale:

Not much, really. Seems pretty silly for someone like me to tell an artist how to paint a picture. I told Mr. Hurst I liked small scroll, fancy borders and I wanted a pig on one side and the meerkat on the other. I have seen enough of his work to know that anything else would just be getting in his way.

I love the use of damascus for the butt plate!
I always thought I would like a double with damascus lock plates - can be as beautiful as engraving IMO.

Gentlemens:

I finally have the action back in my hot little hands. Looking at it up close and personal is something of a reality check. Look again at the picture of the pig and all the detail. In the real world that pig is only 1" tall from foot to the top of his head! It is impossible to appreciate just how fine the detail is until you hold the action in your hand. The flip side is perhaps even more astounding. There is a bright cut on the eyes of the meerkat that actually makes the eye appear three dimensional. The thing doesn't just have eyes, it has eyes that are actually looking at something.

This work is as fine as I have ever seen. And not just the representational art. The scroll work scaled down to its real size is as fine and graceful as one could ever want.

If any of you good folks are interested in getting a gun scratched up, I don't know how you could do better than to call Mr. Hurst. I am humbled to have this engraving on my metalwork.
