A Question of Value?
      #11225 - 09/03/04 07:59 AM

Hi Guys,

I picked this up for what I thought was a great deal. I have not been able to find much info on Boss and Co double rifles.

You find lots of info on the shotguns but almost nothing on the rifles.

This is the Question....What is this worth?

500 BPE double rifle, 75% plus rose and scroll extra-fine engraving, Back action with safties, underlever, in untouched 70% condition, bore is 95%. The one problem I have had to have a crack on the tang welded and need to get a small area of engraving retouched.

Please any guess?

The black powder rifles seem to be slowly creeping up in price. I remember when it was very difficult to sell one regardless of who's name was on the barrel. I will make a stab at pricing the rifle but due to the fact that I don't have it in front of me, I can't promise anything but an educated guess. If the gun is in the condition that you mentioned, it should easily bring 5500-6500. Some dealers will ask a lot more but again there are not a huge amount of buyers for the bpe rifles. You also neglected to say if the gun was cased? Does it have tools? These will increase the value of the rifle. Again this is just a guess.

urdubob - Boss double rifles ARE exceedingly rare - according to Donald Dallas, the total production of centre-fire hammer rifles in the 1858 - 1890 period (basically - the pre-nitro era) was 75 - during the same period 962 centre-fire hammer shotguns were produced (along 735 pinfire shotguns and 31 pinfire rifles). But this disparity in production between shotguns and rifles merely reflects the very low production of rifles by English makers, and the extra rarity of Boss double rifles is merely a reflection of the low production output of Boss in general prior to it's aquisition by John Robertson in 1891. Even then, rifles were never Boss' forte - but they did produce some of the rarest and most desirable double rifles - based on their U/O action. Now - if you had one of those!!! Unfortunately - I have never seen one of those "in the flesh" - has any on the members I wonder? By the way - has anybody out there seen (or heard!) a Boss magazine rifle??

Insofar as value is concerned - unless there is a Boss collector out there that just has to round out his collection with a Boss double rifle - I'm afraid there is no premium for rarity and your rifle would be be of similar value to any other English double of similar level of finish and condition. If it was in it's original case, with ALL original accessories, it would be worth considerbly more, but you did not indicate whether this was so?

Well a Boss shotgun can fetch a $100,000.00 in a heartbeat, so I would not part with that gun until I knew exactly what it was worth...

Call Billy Hodge in Iredell, Texas at 254-364-2585, tell him I sent you...He should have as good an idea as anyone what its worth....

urdobob,

Hello! A belated reply, and congratulations on picking up the fine Boss double rifle. Sounds like you have found a rarity in the firearms world indeed.

Short of contacting any of the big name, well-known auction houses in the U.S. that handle rare and antique firearms--for an appraisal fee--have you tried contacting Boss & Co. Ltd. in London? Perhaps they could help you in arriving at a proper and correct valuation for your firearm, or else point you in the proper direction to someone else who may be able to help you. Their address is:

Boss & Co. Ltd.
16 Mount Street
London W1K2RH
Tel: +44 (0) 20 7493 1127
Fax: +44 (0) 20 7493 0711
E-mail: info@bossguns.com

There is also a Boss Owners Club. Their website:

http://www.bossguns.co.uk/ownersclub

Hope some of this might prove helpful to you. Good luck and good show!

Best regards,

"LightningTwice"
