Optical Scope on a .470NE ?
      #11185 - 08/03/04 05:04 PM

I will be getting a new custom .470NE double which is being
started as we speak. The maker suggested that I also get an optical scope--so I can use the gun with either the metal sites or an optical scope.
I am also looking for a highend optical scope for it; it will have fixed fore sight ramp and 2 folding rear sights;
I am unsure if I should asked for claw-mounts, or Quick Release Mounts, or even a rail? I will be using the
folding sights for the majority of my shooting, however
as I get older, and for some tricky shooting-perhaps
an optical scope would be nice. What are the pros-cons
of the claw mounts, QRM, or Rail mounts? Also, what
scope would you recommend? I know that they are expensive,
$1000.00 to $2000.00 USD, but want to purchase one scope and use it.
Any ideas would be great!
Thanks,
CardiacDoc

I'm putting the Swarowski 1,25-4x24 Circle dot on my Blaser S2 Safari in 470 NE. I have the same scope on my 375 with leopolds QR mount and it works great.

Putting a scope on a fine double is bordering on evil, more foul than incest!!

...who's the maker?...i would think that most makers should have their own thoughts on what works best on their own doubles/ribs...

...if you look at the krieghoff/negc websites you should get an idea of the types of mounts typically used on a double rifle...

...there are many variations on the type of claw mounts that you may install on a double (in either ring or rail format, and with or without a base), and it may even be advisable to speak with some noted double gunsmiths for some suggestions...do a search here on double gunsmiths for some leads/names...

...in the dg scope department, i would go with a s+b 1.25-4x20 illuminated flash dot #9 reticle or a swaro 1.25-4x30 ph-series #24 reticle...the cost should be miniscule compared to the cost of a best grade double rifle...

I like it very much even if I have not fired it yet. But it is getting closer - I have dies and bullets in Los Angeles (will go ther March 25) and the rest at home.

If you are convinced that you need a scope on a 470, I would most likely consider the claw mount. They are expensive and who ever you choose to do the work should really know what he is doing. As far as scope selections go, I have Zeiss, Schmidt & Bender, Leupold and Swarovski. To be honest they all work perfectly and have never given me a minutes trouble. The Schmidt is very rugged and seems to be immune to recoil. It is somewhat heavier than the other scopes.

I'm a norwegian and new to the forum, but had to make a reply here. I hope it could be of some help!

1. Scope on a heavy hitter..? I'm thinking of putting a scope on a .416 Rigby, but would leave a heavy double whitout.. However, I suppose you've made up your mind, so the ONLY right mount on such a weapon woud be a german claw-mount! I have one on my drilling, and it's a joy to use. The best there is, and well worth the cost! It also won't ruin the looks and value of your gun.

2. Type of scope: I'm used to european optics, Zeiss on rifles and binos, but on such a rifle you would v be better off to use the small 1,5-5x20 from Leupold. Here you get adequate eye relief to shoot the gun well.. I suppose you want a comb that accomodate open sigts aswell, and to put a Swarovski with a mere 7-8cm eye relief would most certainly give you a blue eye... A Leupold is also small enough to be carried along in a pocket when not in use. And add little weight to the gun: i e won't mess up the point of impact.. I've heard this is more of a problem with lighter calibers? "Highend" scope: A Leupold matte, german no.4 would be considered highend in Europe, the optics are bright enough for whatever you want to hunt with a .470! Shooting cape buff in the dark is a bit risky

Good luck with your double! I look forward to get a DR myself in not to long Great forum by the way!

I have a Merkel but have considered a Blaser S-2 with a quick detachable scope for accurate "longer" shots(outside 50 yds)and placement with my older eyes. With Blaser touting its accuracy, the option of a scope for longer initial shots, then removing the scope for stalking has definite appeal. Kinda like having a scoped big bolt gun and a double in one. Anyone tried this approach?

OK so here's where i get both barrels () sorry guys but as you get old enuf your eyes are going to go to hell too and even on a double you end up wanting a scope. I sut one on my merkel 470. The rib on the merkel is the same width as a ruger 77, so i machined dovetails into the rib and used a set of leupold detachable rings. Now not only did i do that, but I mounted a 1-5 bushnell 3200 on it. I know I didn't say leupold, but it does have the firefly reticule. Now for the horrendus thing. Everything works fine. It didn't effect regulation, didn't blow up or any bad things, what it did do was let me put those ugly crosshairs on the elephants forehead in the right spot, instead of just seeing things as a blur.

Someone here got someone to set up a set of rings for a
Beretta Silver Sable 9.3 x 74R and it worked fine
without any regulation problems.

I might try that on my Merkel 470.

I do know someone who put a holo sight (ie Aimpoint)
on the Merkel 470. Looked funny but it worked !

If I had a set of young eyes the Double would be great to 100+ yds. As I have gotten older the eyes have gone south and my focal length is past my arms. YES,THIS IS REALLY CRAPPY!!

A scope seems to compensate for this problem at distance.I am much more accurate with my big Bolt guns at 75 yds than my 470 Merkel(recoil seems similar). At close range with a double I hope I can be disciplined and practice quicker and more effective reflexive shooting than with the scoped 416.The closer the target the more the Double rules!!

500 nitro - OK I did it to a matched pair of beretta golden sables too. On the 9.3 I machined the dovetails into the rib just like the merkel. On the 06 since I wasn't worried about a detachable scope I took a piece of barstock and machined 2 dovetails for the full length, then cut a slot out of the bottom so the bar would fit tightly over the rib, and is held tight by 2 set screws on each side. Gee this is a tame site, When I mentioned doing my merkel on ar I thought my ancestory had been changed to scratching myself while my parents were married.
