I have had the great pleasure to hunt with Tristan in 2007 in Zimbabwe. 2007hunting with Tristan and Buzz
The “king of the hounds” , as dubbed in Buzz’s video, hangs up his gloves. A pity, he is a really talented hunter and satisfied many a client. He is a master in the art of hunting leopard with hounds, spending as much time locating big toms as guiding clients. His GPS is a real gold mine. Moreover he has a lot of videos taking when hunting leopard and I was told it’s awesome. But Tristan doesn’t care about advertising.
here are the messages he sent
Dear Friends and Family Just a short note, the family and I will be leaving Zimbabwe to set up home in the Cape with my parents. I am joining the family business and retiring from hunting. I will be finishing off my obligations here in Zimbabwe next year. I will be using my gmail account from now onwards zimhound@gmail.com . Hi my friend, yes I am sad to be going. My mother and father need me back home. So I must go. I will be doing early season hunts with friends, and mostly bow hunting. I am setting up a bow hunting camp on our farm in south africa and will be doing Blue Duiker and caracal hunts for bow hunting. I am planning on booking mountain lion hunts in the states All the best Tristan Peacock
He wish he’ll change his mind or Africa would have lost a unique character.
GOOD LUCK TRISTAN

Argh - thats just sad - however I can understand him - tho he might be back someday.
P.S. Leopard with dogs would be my pick if I ever wanted to hunt "The spots".

A question:
How long do leopard races normally go?
Here a lion race most times goes 1/2 hour and not too far at all, as they have no wind. Bear of course are the Marathoners, and will run days.

I am really intrigued by the comparison of a leopard with a cougar. On an average the cougar seems heavier & larger. But the leopard seems to be more aggressive & dangerous. I am not sure if a cougar could carry a deer up a tree like a leopard does with an impala or a chital.

We made 3 attempts in vain and the fourth day we manage to climb the leopard. Each day we chased during about 3-4 hours before the hot air vaporized the scent. At the last attempt, the hounds struggled 2 hours before undoubtly connecting, the leopard ran during 2 hours.
I regret that Tristan won't edit a video. He has so many awesome clips.

Larcher, you make a great point.
Lion hunting here takes place in winter, in snow typically, with fresh track found before turning loose.
Bear on the other hand varies, but even here we experience a lot of very dry and hot conditions as you describe in early September.
Having said that, once a fresh track is found, the lion race is short, the bear much longer.
A cougar running 2 hours here would be a long race altogether, from what my hound hunting friends tell me. In fact, tho, rarely are hounds turned loose on cougar track here until snow. I do not hunt cougar, but have hunted bear quite a bit, and shot 8 of them. I believe one or two were killed after a race of 2 hours, but most ran quite a bit longer than that before baying or treeing. Those of course were the ones killed. Many bear simply outrun the dogs.
The dog in the picture looks like a Walker. Do you know what breed it is?
Incidently, I have also run monkeys in the Congo with Walker hounds. Great sport, tho the dogs died of disease or crocs before a breeding pack could be established.

I'll second 9.3 on the bear/hounds experience. Bear are machines. They'll run day in and day out sustaining speeds that will surprise you -- it's incredible how much country a bear chase can cover.
I have never hunted the big cats, but I definitely want to get after a cougar some time in the next few years. My Plott hound goes ape shit whenever a cat gets near our place. He might help us win a nice cat cape!
