      #111252 - 07/08/08 07:12 AM

A freind of mine asked me to make
him a survival / camping knife.
he had a few ideas and then he left me a sketch of the tops tracker.

this is what i came upp with.
itīs made out of 12C27 and black paper mikarta.
the blade is 5mm thick.

what do you guys think?

Roger, your skill is superb! You can grind and fit amazingly well.

As a hobby knifemaker, I really enjoy your posts.

We have somewhat different tastes in design. I make survival and bolo knives mostly, and many of mine are gifts for servicemen and are now or have been strapped to Molle gear or hung from web belts in Iraq and elsewhere. I make them so a fellow can sharpen them blindfolded with one arm tied behind his back. Many are single-bevel edges {the easiest to sharpen}. This one you show here is REALLY well done, but I think would be very difficult for the average guy to sharpen, especially in the field. The complex grind on the main edge would be a challenge except in a shop.

A curiousity...what is the Rockwell hardness? Do you do you own heat treatment?

I make mine from mostly simple carbon steels, "scrap" steels like millsaws and chainsaw bars, and I heat treat in a simple and very crude furnace, but get excellent results due to the ease in heat treating simple carbon steels. I give a differential heat treatment with the edge hardness governed by whether a fellow wants to be able to sharpen it with a file or a stone.

Again, you've done a very nice job!

Tack so mycket for posting!
