Mahseer in India

Pump house gang strikes again aka-2008 Year of the Mahseer

Home is Bhakra Hilton, run by Sandeep and his father Pavan, we just took over the place, charpoys were quickly assembled and voila-home.

Tackle readied, we cast along the banks this gang uses only plugs and spoons…though Henry being a carp man did break out his masala mix and tried bait fishing.

Lalaji and the art of zen fishing

The boat comes by and we go out trawling-Henry scores a quick brace –both about 2-3 klg, Sanjay lands his first mahseer-the grin is on from ear to ear.

Kenneth and Henry close at hand to show me the moves…

Well after seeing the effort required the previous day, I was taken by surprise to see another major run, this time in a 360 Deg- another 100m line gone, notch up the drag and continues on the pump and wind. After a good 20min,about 20ft from the boat, the fish surfaces and a collective ‘‘AHHHHH, big one” goes up. Me? all I’ can think is- I have enough line and my hands are not shaking too much…another run-shorter this time, I can hold the fish, a yet shorter run and I get it close to the gunnels. Lalaji nets it and Kenneth and Henry help in unhooking-Big?I may catch a 50kg later but this was my monster fish.
Pic session done, fish released in good cheer-amazed our Capn Preet-a lad all of 13 years, who was temp’ing for his dad, “you let the fish go??!!”

Rod -Rowen Tackle 100-300g Mahseer
Line- 30lb Sufix braid, shock leader of 20lb mono
Plug-Reef runner

Cool trip. I love that boat! Did you eat those fish? Curious as to how they were prepared. I grew up on the Mississippi River in western KY and carp were eaten quite ofter. Alot of people canned it, kind of like salmon. Other people brined and smoked them. The secret is getting the bones out. I wish I knew how to do it.

Bigmaxx,Afraid not-for mahseer, only 'catch and release'
A good table fish would be the Sowl/sol/marral- aka channa marulius.
Am more into C&R, may take home the odd 'channa',I started fishing late in life, trying very hard to catch up...
That boat is a regular ferry, which ferries people across the Bhakra nangal dam...I hope to go back soon.

Not quite the size of Old Jim`s "fish of his dreams" but nonetheless you surely had a great time, the camp looks fantastic too on the river like that.

eljefedouble,
Have you ever fished the rivers around Corbett National Park such as the Pindar, Ramgangar and the Bhagirathi river systems?

Ozhunter-no, this was my first major foray in Northern India-most times I fish in the river cauvery, down south, near Bangalore.I have heard fantastic stories of ramganga, past and present, hope the river survives till I get there...

It looks and sounds like a good time was had by all. I notice that you are all pretty heavily clothed. What was the temperature up there during the days and nights?

Eric-mid feb, fag end of winter, but wind chill was pretty evident-except Henry, our annual visitor from UK, in the green T, most of us were bundled up,while on the boat.A while later , even Henry got into his thermals and flannels!
the hut too was right at the water's edge-fantastic wake up view, but damn, it was cold!
guesstimate, about 12deg C at night.
