Information about Humani sought
      #110844 - 01/08/08 08:12 AM

I found out that the second leg of my upcoming Zimbabwe safari is to be at Humani with Roger Whittall. I would appreciate it if anyone can tell me about the area and what to expect. Thanks! -MaxW

Plenty of Plains game, Cheeky Elephant, nice camps and some human population.
The Lowvelt is quite different to the Zambezi Vally and has some game not found in the vally such as Wilderbeast and Giraffe.

I can't comment on what the area is like nowadays, but I can tell you that Roger has been in the business a loooong time, is one of the best and he has a top class reputation in the industry.

Good to hear! I start out in the Zambezi Valley at Chewore. Once my buffalo is taken I transfer to Humani for plains game. All I have heard of Roger Whittall has been great. I leave August 29th! Cant wait. Thanks for the info...

As others here have already stated, Roger is in a league of his own. Have a great hunt!

Exactly how is lowvelt different from the Zambezi Valley? From my online research is seems lowvelt is a loose definition of "low field". Is is more grass, or open scrub? I am taking a .375 Ruger African as my light rifle. I made that desicion thinking my entire hunt would be in Chewore located in the valley. I hope I didnt inadvertantly limit myself. I feel comfortable shooting the .375 out to 100 - 150 yards from sticks. I shoot it fairly well at 200 from a solid rest. Thanks! -MaxW

Most of the Lowveldt is Thorn bush country with most shots taken in close but you do get shots across sand rives and off Rock out crops but rarely over 200m. Chewore is more Mopanie woodland and Jesse Bush.
Both have nice Riverine Bush along the sand rivers.
I would also try for a Bush Buck from both areas as they are different (Chobe and the Limpopo Bush Buck).

Yes, the Chobe bushbuck is listed on the trophy list. I hope to get one. I have racked my brain trying to decide on rifles and loads till I am blue in the face. I am going to take what I've decided on, and feel confident it will work just fine. I get really wierd about that stuff even hunting deer at home. It seems to always work out okay. Sometimes it takes some devine intervention to "get me out of the way"...LOL. Do you think there are any other modifications to my gear list that would be needed for Humani?

I have twice done this very same hunt. First Chewore for elephants and then on to Humani, however I did most of my hunting in Humani with a recurve bow (so I would not be worried about a .375!!!!).

Who is going to be your PH?

Humani is part of the Save Conservancy (several ranches were joined) and althought it has had some trouble with people invading part of it, the area is huge. There are elephants, lions and a LOT of leopards. Once I was in a blind and had a Cheetah with 3 cubs about 4 steps from us (my wife was with me and got a really nice video). On another trip I had huge bull rhino mudding himself in front of me for a long time. But the real nice thing about Humani is to stalk the elephant paths near the river with the bow (or gun). Lots of bushbucks and some Kudu and other game.

Roger is an excelent host and you please send my best to him and his family, Dante
