Greener Empire shotguns - age
      #110722 - 30/07/08 05:36 PM

Does anyone know what dates the Greener Empire shotguns were made in? What years? Thanks.

John:
The 'Empire' action was patented in 1910, and the first prototype (no. 57740) was started in feb 1910 but not completed. The first Empire to be finished (no. 57894) was started on 15 March 1910 and completed on 15 May of that year. From 1910 to 1919 about 30 per month were made (~360 per year) with less during the war years. They were made by Greener up till 1965 when Webley & Scott acquired the firm and stock, and finished-off another ~170 up till 1971. A few short-bar Empires were made in 1925 apparently. In all, some 17,268 Empires were made by WW Greener between 1910 and 1965.

Info from Graham Greener's book, "The Greener Story" Chapter 10: The Emperor and Empire Models 1894 - 1971, pp127-130.

I should add that anyone who would rather spend their spare readies on a box of Bud than buy this book is a DUNCE!

I have my eye on one locally with 32" barrels, 2.75" chambers. Anyone here own an Empire model? What are your opinions?

My opinion?

IMO they are probably the strongest of the pommie side-by-sides (referring to the long-bar waterfowl and pigeon-style guns, not the short-bar game-guns).

The side-safety takes some getting used to. My .577 conversion has a 'rib' brazed onto the button to give a positive grip even when the thumb is slippery with sweat, blood, insect repellent etc.

Despite never actually intending to acquire an Empire Greener, I have ended up owning three! One is the .577 Light Nitro conversion on an E-17 action, which is one of my favourite hunting doubles and a real 'fun-gun' at the range. One is a fairly original E-17, and the third is an E-12 grade gun bought cheap at auction because it had an 'accident' and 2-inches had been lopped off the barrels, ie no chokes, or true cylinder-bore. It is my daily water-fowler on the local hunting reserves where steel shot is mandatory.

The only down-side would be the potential difficulty of making a new main-spring if one ever broke: they double as the cocking rods.

So yeah! I guess I like 'Empire' Greeners. They kinda grow on you!
