WANTED; someone to finish my 45-70 DR
      #110694 - 30/07/08 03:31 AM

Greetings All:

Approximately four years ago a professional gunsmith acquaintance of mine took on a project of converting a 20-gauge sxs baikal shotgun into a 45-70 DR. I gave him the brand new shotgun and barrels and said, "Go to it".

Four years later he has still not finished the project. He keeps telling me it takes time and he is busy and he has other projects and, and, and. I know that all he has done is attached the 45-70 barrels to the action and done a little filling to fit the contour of the barrels to the action.

My patience is at an end and I am hoping to find someone on this site who would be willing to take over the project. I know no one likes to pick up someone else’s partially finished work. I would be happy to send you photos of the project to-date. As far as I know, this is no hack job. The gunsmith is a professional and an artist; the problem is he is bone-lazy. The man has no bills, no responsibility, lives with his well-to-do brother and only works for spending money.

I have always wanted a double rifle and 45-70 is one of my favourite calibres. I got so tired of waiting I went out and bought a 9.3x74R Antonio Zoli sxs DR; Pictured in double rifle section.

I am writing from Alberta, Canada. If you are interested, please respond and I would be happy to discuss the project with you. Or if you have any suggestions as to how I can motivate my gunsmith, I would welcome your suggestions. I tried money, it doesn't seem to work.

Kind regards,

Carpediem4570

Dear Sir,
I am afraid you will have trouble finding any gunsmith with experience in converting shotguns into rifles. There just aren't many of us out there. If you lived in the U.S. and could get it shipped to me, I would have been willing to look it over and give you some ideas about what needed to be done with it to finish it up. If you could export it to a friend of yours in this country, legally, and then have it sent on to me ,I would still be willing, but with the laws the way they are today, I'm not sure this is feasible. I wish you well with your project and hope you can bring it to a sucessful conclusion. I would dump the gunsmith who has already had it for this long, and maybe take out an add in a gun trade magazine and ask for a smith who knows about these things. My guess is that this guy told you he could do it, and then found out he was in over his head. That's most likely why he has refused to finish it. It's hard telling what he may have done to it already. Have you personally seen it lately? If not,I would go and retreave it right away, no matter what. If he doesn't know what he is doing, you don't want to shoot it anyway! This may not be what you wanted to hear, but it is what you need to hear. Bob H.

There is the husband and wife team of Jim and Trisha White in Maine as well: http://www.jwhitegunsmithing.com They routinely make double rifles on shotgun actions. And on these forums is Brian Perazone http://www.bpgunsmith.com/

I don't own double rifles and I have no experience with Jim White but I do own a very nice MAuser rifle that Brian Perazone sold me. I have nothing but praise for his products and pricing.

Best wishes!

Thank you all for your responses.

I went to see the gunsmith today and asked for the project to be returned. When I get it I will post photos of the five years of work he has done.

One problem I will encounter is how do I get my project from Canada into the United States? Any sugestions will be helpfull.

Kind regards,

Carpediem4570

Let me suggest you contact Ron Vella of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. He is a member of NE.com who does the types of projects you need completed.

Here is a link to his profile:

He also posts on AR sometimes.

This might save the export-import problem.

Hope this helps.

Brian Perazone is a good gunsmith, I have no doubt of that. But the last time I talked to him he was getting ready to be deployed for the third time to the Mideast war. He will be gone for some time, maybe up to a year or more. I'm sure you all join me in wishing him a safe and speedy return from this, the latest of his deployments. I would say he is one of the true heros that this country has produced, lately. They are out there fighting for Us, not just the U.S. Bob H.

Bob,

Brian is now fully retired from his military service from what I know. Yes, he, Steve Zihn who also posts here and other fine people who have served in the armed forces, are all real heroes and true gentlemen.

Mehulkamdar,
That's mighty strange then, because when I talked to him on the phone last month to buy two barrels from him, he told me himself that he was getting ready to go over on his third tour. Unless our government has changed their minds, which I doubt, he is due to report this month. He told me so himself. Bob H.

Bob,

YOur information should be right, then. My information is rom when I bought my rifle from him about a year ago. I still dor ecall, though, that he said that he was going to retire but I am more than capable of confusing things. Age and stress in my case . . .

Good hunting!
