Thanks, 400NitroExpress,
You have cleared my mind muchly. I guess if shoe lumps are just as strong as monoblocks I might as well look for the smooth barrel. The 450/.400 sure is a sweet little round that shouldn't loosen my fillings. My only fear was being like Hemingway's wife Pauline, when she pricked her lion with the 6.5 Mannlicher, leaving EH and the PH to finish him off with the bigger stuff.

Karamojo Bell wouldn't have 'pricked' a lion with the 6.5 Mannlicher - he would perhaps have saved the round for an elephant!

I hope if I get a shot at a dangerous game animal, I don't screw it up. But with two competents providing backup, who probably pushed her into taking the shot anyway, I don't think its any shame to her.

Point taken. Yes, she was a sport. I doubt whether I'll get my wife out there, even to carry the waterbottle.

400 is correct, what ever he tells you you can take to the bank! Mono-block is not weaker than shoelump,in fact it is actually stronger, but the shoe lump simply "LOOKS" better, and both are more than strong enough. The mono-block if done properly, is exactly the same as the way a barrel is fitted to a bolt action rifle. The one piece MONO-BLOCK includs the reciever for both barrels, and the lumps as a solid peice of steel. This is fitted to the action exactly the same way all breach end of the barrels, and lumps are fitted to the action. with the hole drilled through the mono-block and threaded for about 1" while the rest of the hole is honed to a press fit for the barrel butts. The barrel portion that is not threaded, is fluxed, the barrel screwed into the mono-block, with about 1/4" of barrel sticking out of the breach end. The barrels are then brazed into the mono-block from the breach end. The barrel ends are then faced off to match the face of the breach end of the mono-block. I fail to see how that can be weaker than other methods. However, any method done sloppily is not acceptable.

You will not have to worry about punching a hole in a lion with the 450/400NE 3" That cartridge will "GET'ER DONE!"

Thanks Dugaboy,
Yes, I had thought that might be the way of it. Being a Beretta fan, I have a soft spot for any technology they embrace.

As to the lion, I was just using it as an analogy. Since they don't let us bring any big cats into Oz, a buffalo might be the only big-five game I could justify.

Also, thanks New Guy, I'll hope for a rifle with less wood up front.

If you mean Big cat trophy into Aus then yes you can bring in Lion but not spotted cats. Go figure?

Tell me more, ozhunter. Has the situation changed or was I just wrong? It's not often I'm glad to be wrong but this could be one of them.

You can bring in Lion but not Leopard, go figure??
There are plenty of Leopard in Africa so this is unfortunatly just a case of "Aus government not having a clue about some of their own laws, rules or ideas".

Thanks ozhunter. Yes, I would have thought leopards would be more plentiful.

But I will go figure - what it would cost to get a lion and bring it back. Where are they most affordable, hopefully with buffalo and kudu nearby? Anyone, anyone?

Sorry to digress from the thread, sometimes ideas just get a life of their own.

Lion hunt prices have shot up in the past few years $30'000+ on average (Glad I got mine when I did).
Leopard is another story, but at the moment you would have to be happy with photos and maybe leave the skin with friends OS.

I might have to leave out the lion, then. Hopefully, a fair bit of the $30,000 goes to the communities where the lions are shot, whereby the pride might become a matter of pride for the locals rather than pests to be eradicated at every opportunity.

Lapua,
How is the load testing coming on?
If I don't make it to Africa this year I might go early next. You might be interested in trying it out on a Buff, Ele or Eland.
Start saving.
