243 Projectiles for Bok and Impala.
      #110117 - 21/07/08 09:04 AM

I'm taking my 243 to Africa in September for 'The Heir Apparent' to use on Springbok, Impala, Steinbok, Caracal, Black Backed Jackal and possibly Warthog.

Rifle is a Parker Hale Mauser 98 and scope a Zeiss Victory 2.5-10x42 that has just been re-barreled by local firm MAB. Hunting will be spotlighting in the OFS and stalking in the Bushveld of the Limpopo.

I have always received great advice in this forum from knowledgeable and experienced hunters. What projectile should I load up for the above game ?

Cheers.

That .243 will do nicely on all the game you plan on taking. My only concern would possibly be the Warthog. For all the others, there's nothing wrong with using something like the Nosler Partition. It's proved it's worth over the years. On the pig, I'd personally opt for something constructed a little bit stouter. I'm sure someone else here can shed some of their knowledge on the subject though.

I would use the 100 gr Nosler Partition bullet on everything, without hesitation.

I would agree with a nosler partition.Too bad Swift doesn't make an A Frame to hunt with.

Be sure and place the bullet well on the warthog. I shot a good size specimen and was impressed with how tough they were when shot with a 338 Swift Aframe!!

African animals are pretty tough so if you are going to use the 243 be sure to place the shot accurately or else you will have a chase on your hands.I have been using a 243 with Nosler's for quite sometime and have a bit of experiance with it.A 270 however would be ideal.

Please check the twist of the barrel FIRST! Some of the old rifles had a 1:12 inch twist & will not stabilise 100gr bullets. Winchester made 1:10 inch & later Remington 243s are 1:9 (old 6mm Rems were 1:12). I have seen European rifles like Voer & Krico with 1:12 twists.

If your rifle is definitely 1:10 or less twist, then great. If not, you are better of taking a 6.5 cal for the young man. He would get great results with a 125 gr Nosler Part at 2900+ fps & mild recoil.

For the 243 with fast twist I would agree on the above post for a 100 gr Nosler Partition or a Barnes TSX.

Happy hunting & good luck to the young man!

Barrel is a 1 in 10" twist.

The Nosler Partition is a good bullet, but I see no reason not to use whatever premium bullet you are used to shooting and even one of the bonded plastic tipped bullets. Something heavier would be preferable for the warthog, but its not a necessity. I'm sure Woodleigh do some good 6mm weldcores that I assume would not be too pricey as you are in Oz. Thousands of Springbok and Impala have been shot with .223 and I bet jackals too, so you should do fine with a 6mm (.243).

tophet, I use 105gr Hornady A-Max bullets exclusively in my .243. (Now on its 5th barrel...)
Yes, it is an extremely fragile bullet, but I use mine for culling (headshots) exclusively. In that capacity, it has worked well on a few thousand springbok, some blesbok, several oryx, and a few kudu and eland.
I think for your appliaction, which I presume would be mostly body shots, the 100gr Partition, or any of the 85gr monometal bullets, will be hard to beat. My son shot his first zebra with the 100gr Partition, once again, not reccommended, but I argued that I was there with my 8x68, and where pretty sure that I would get a shot in if the shot looked to be off. (Even ON the shoulder would have been off, he shot it behind the shoulder, slightly high, but still effective.)
Hope this helps.

I have used the .243 for everything from Canadian Whitetails to antelope to black bear..and have had no problems with any using primarily Noslers in 100 gr weight..with the velocity the .243 runs at, the Nosler Partitions are a very good choice as stated by others above..

Other options would be,, Barnes makes a 85 gr Triple shock...Remington makes a 100gr Cor-lokt Bonded bullet and Swift makes a 90gr Scirroco --all these would probably work as well, but with the hog thrown in the mix,,would probably choose the Triple shock if I was not using the Nosler Partition...

Federal also offers factory loaded Triple shocks for the .243 as well...

I once shot a huge warthog bore with a borrowed .243 Sako and 100-gr Nosler Partitions. It was a going-away shot and the bullet entered on the left hip and exited on the point of the right shoulder. I have since shot quite a few smaller antelope such as blesbuck and impala as well as a number of warthogs (as well as a kudu bull, but I won't try to duplicate that stunt anytime soon) with the .243 and either 95/100 gr Partitions or the 90 gr Swift Scirocco. Both bullets give very good penetration, especially the Partition, and they will do fine for what you have in mind.

If I were you I would load the Partitions to about 3 000 ft/sec and not worry about a thing. If your son places the bullets well everything you mentioned will go down in their tracks.

I'm a big fan of premium bullets but I used to have great luck with the 105g Speer Spitzer in my .243 Rem 700. I used it on deer, elk and black bear before gun writers convinced me I needed more gun lol. Actually it was moving into grizzly country that got me to upgrade to a 270. I used to get 3000 fps out of a 22" barrel using IMR 4350 and Rem 9 1/2M primers with Rem brass. Back when I was shooting my 243 (late 60s early 70s) Nosler only made semi-spitzers in 100g so I didn't use them.
