Ruger 1-A, heavyweight
      #108888 - 04/07/08 03:15 AM

Hello Folks,

Ruger lists the weight of my 7x57mm model 1-A as seven pounds. With a 12.8 oz scope mounted, mine weighs eight pounds even. I'm putting some time and effort into getting it to shoot well, and would like to reduce the weight too. Other than a Leupold Ultralight scope (FX-II 2.5x20mm, 6.5 oz), do you know of any areas where weight may safely be removed from the 1-A? Do you know of any gunsmiths who have a good reputation with this gun?

Thank you, Tom

You could possibly have the barrel turned a bit, and a few ounces of wood shaved off here and there, but the fact remains that the Ruger action is substantial, the receiver large, and in order to fit a two piece stock to the receiver beefy metal tabs must be part of the picture.

You are not going to be able to trim down this gun the same way you would a bolt action, and turning a barrel and shaving wood is not going to be cheap.

I have and shoot the same gun/calibre as you do, and with the 2x7 Burris I have on mine, I'm coming in at eight pounds twelve ounces. I don't think you're doing that badly.

I find that my tropical #1 balances the best when it weighs around 9 1/2lbs....try some offhand shooting with it before you nock its weight down. You might really like the result. I have yet to shoot any game with that rifle from any position other than offhand (I'd rather shoot sitting down but wasn't lucky enough to have that chance with this rifle). I do most of my hunting in the mountains in eastern Va. I don't mind the extra weight if It aids in my shooting.

Just a thought
Pat
