SxS Antoniozoli DR in 9.3x74R
      #108711 - 02/07/08 06:03 AM

Hello All:

I am a new member to this online chat.

I recently purchased my first SxS DR in Antoniozoli 9.3x74R. The rifle was used; coming to me with what appeared to be less than one box of ammo fired, 16 rounds. I have the warranty card as well as the proof target.

Now for the questions:

Although I am an avid, longtime hunter, re-loader and bullet caster, I have never worked up a load for a DR. From what I have read on this site, the DR must be sighted in standing from a standing bench. When working up a load, do I find the most accurate load in one barrel and then try to get the other barrel to cross at one hundred metres or, do I fire one barrel and then the other until the loads regulate properly?

The DR comes with open sights only. There is no provision for mounting a scope. I would like to mount a scope using a QD or claw mount system. Should I send it back to Italy for refit or is this something that can be done by a gunsmith? If a gunsmith can do it, can someone recommend a smith as the smiths in my city are not so much gunsmiths as they are butchers.

And finally, how do I add photos so I can show you guys and gals my new baby?

Kindest regards,

carp

The rifle will probably shoot with 286 grain bullets. Is that what you have?

If so shoot two from each barrel at a range you can see accurately with the open sights.

What do you have?

A chronograph is handy as the rifle should be shooting around 2350 with factory ammo.

If the bullets are apart than increase the velocity if crossing, decrease it. It is not a bolt rifle so don't worry about hot rodding it. Just use a velocity that allows it to shoot as well as it can.

If they are apart vertically make sure you are resting the rifle on your hand and not on anything hard.

For bases try Rolf Martini in Cranbrook

Thanks for your quick reply Mickey:

The proof target I recieived with the rifle shows the rifle is regulated at 100 metres using a 16.7 gram, (approx. 256 grain?), RWS H. Mantel bullet.

For working up loads I have purchased the Nosler 250 grain accubond spitzer boatail, using new Norma brass.

I will also try using a speer 270 grain bullet to see how that works out.

I have a cronograph so I will be able to keep track of velocity.

Does Rolf also provide bases that would allow me to use the open sights as well as mount a scope?

Be careful of Norma brass. Unless they have changed it recently most people who used the 9.3 brass had case head separation after 3 or so reloadings. Some quicker.

Rolf can put on anything you want. I'm not sure of the configuration on the Zoli so would leave it to hi9m./ Just tell him what you want.

Take some pictures and post them for us.

Hello Mickey:

Thanks for the heads-up on the Norma Brass. I will be watching for case-head seperation.

How do I post pics on this site?

You had indicated in the earlier post that I should fire two shots from each barrel. Is that two from the right then two from the left, or is it one right, one left, one right and one left? Sorry for the stupid questions. I just want to get it right.

Kindest regards,

Fire 4 shots alternating each barrel as you go. This will allow you to see what you have. It is easy to to get confused about which is which but you need to keep track so you can see how the rifle is shooting.

From what I have read on this site, the DR must be sighted in standing from a standing bench.

A 9.3 can be shot sitting from a bench. Just make sure you have your hand holding the forend and it doesn't rest on the sand bag.

The standing rest makes the recoil easier to handle.

I'm no expert but in my 9.3 I shot 2 shot 'groups' from each barrel. One from the first barrel, then the second, then the first again and last from the second barrel. Keep track of which bullet hole is which shot.

Now that I have read the thread - what Mickey says.

To insert photos you load the photos onto a suitable photo hosting site or onto space you might have on the web eg using ftp.

Then put the address in image code eg

Here is the factory target for my double rifle.

Haven't had a chance to load test yet. Hopefully tommorow.

I have just regulated a load for my Fabarm Aspen 9.3x74R double. The load is 64 grains of ADI 2209 with a 286 grain Woodleigh Round Nose. This load regulates at 100yrds and averages 2" or better with a scope. Close to 2300 fps. One way I found to keep track of which barrel hits where is I set up two targets and shot bottom barrel on one and top barrel on the other. Avoids confusion.

Good luck

Target shows that regulation was made using factory RWS H mantel 16,7g (factory velocity is V0 750 m/s) or 257.7 gr going 2460.6 fps - that is your first goal - hope it helps.

Thanks foxfire for posting my target. I'm still trying to figure out this photo posting thing.

Hello 450. Never heard of ADI 2209. Who is the manufacturer? Great idea using two targets. I will do that. Do you sight in your sitting or standing?

Thanks for the conversion 93 mouse. I am having a real problem finding rws bullets in Alberta. The closest bullet weight I could find to the original round is the Nosler 250 grain Accubond. I will start with that and work toward 2460 fps.

Carpediem4570,
Nosler makes ammunition for the 9.3X74R using a 250 grain bullet traveling along at 2550 ft.sec. Maybe trying some of that will help.

Carpediem4570. ADI powders are made in Australia and import to the USA by Hogdon I believe. Their H4350 is equivelent to 2209. I do not think it interchangable, so take care and work up gradually. I do the initial sighting in over a benth rest until I find a load that regulates. Take care that your hand on the foreend is between the fore end and the pad/sand bag. After I find the load that works I then resight it standing over a rest. Generally I find that offhand, it will shoot about 2" lower than what it did from the bench.

Greetings and Salutations:

I just came from the range and the above target is the result of shooting my double off the bench at a range of 100 m. The bullets printed high because I was using the wrong sight picture when lining up the front and rear sight, (silly me. It's my first double and I still have things to learn).

My question is, will the bullets change point of impact when the rifle is shot off-hand?

The double was regulated using a 16.7 gram, (256 grains) H Mantel bullet traveling 2460 feet per second. The bullet used for the target was a Nosler 250 grain Ballistic tip at approximately 2450 feet per second. The load was 56.5 grains of IMR 4064 with a Winchester Large Rifle primer. A light crimp was applied to the bullet in the canalure.

Kindest regards,

Carpediem
