Proof testing fixture
      #108536 - 30/06/08 09:03 AM

Gentlemen,
This is a picture or a rifle proofing fixture that I made up just to hold the guns firmly while I was proofing them. It is very simple to make and could be made much lighter than this one. I made mine out of walnut scraps because that was what I had on hand and it is strong and heavy wood. There are some 4 X 6 inch rubber pads glued on the inside of the hold down blocks, top and bottom. I put the holes thruogh it on the corners so I could pound in 60 penny spikes to help hold it, they are not need either. If you look closely, you will see the dacron fishing line that I use to pull the trigger. This fixture is mainly for side by sides, but as you can see, it also works well for over and unders. Very interesting.

Does it scuff the metal under recoil? Could you proof a blued gun?

When I watched proofing at the Musgrave Mauser plant, they held the gun in a metal box. IIRC, there was no attachment of the gun to the box.

Thanks for posting! This is the sort of gun technicalia that really makes a forum a winner IMO. Great idea.

Walnut, now that's class! Mine is just plain old pine, otherwise pretty much identical. While the instructions in Brown's book suggest using the fixture on the ground I've always clamped mine to the shooting bench. I use two large bar clamps - one fore and one aft.

You can re-test a blued gun in this fixture if you are careful getting it in and out of the clamping parts. The rubber pads hold it very well and do not marr the gun's finish. The whole thing is so heavy with the gun in it that the recoil hardly moves it at all. You can't see it in this picture but I also cut in a slot in the top of the long piece for the front sight to fit down into when testing side by sides. They are mounted upside down in it. I don't take any credit for this, I saw it in W. Ellis Brown's book . Bob H.
