The safari classic rifle in .500 jeffery has a bolt action mod 550.
Is it a magnum or a standard action ?

It's a magnum Mauser-variant action. The same action will handle a 505 Gibbs.

I would stick with the Gibbs. Too much variation with the Jeffery. That metric to standard and standard to metric conversion screws things up.

Yes, I'd like to know in which way as well does it screw them up.

Jeffrey had no problem, it's only A Square (I think) and others who decided to complicate the bloody issue by changing things.

Jeffrey or Gibbs - I always say 500J due to the components are easier to get and more bullets but the Gibbs is something Special. I have both and love both.

I don't know the full story here, but Harald Wolf mentions his efforts to standardise and re-introduce the .500 Jeffery in some of his Hatari Times articles.

I assume that if it is just some difference in chamber dimensions (not bullet diameter), then as long as you chamber your rifle for the largest you should be fine - you'll just end up fireforming brass if it happens to be slightly undersize! Maybe that's too simplistic and I'm missing the full story...

I looked at the big CZ a week or so ago. Very nice gun! Check prices at: http://www.whittakerguns.com/ He ships anywhere too. He has great prices. I buy Kimber, Cooper and Ruger there exclusively. He has the Caprivi at the best price anywhere.

You are Far too simplistic.

Harold Wolf is one of the ones who fucked it up
and confused everybody.

He is just not big enough to have an influence
on the market.

Ok - fair enough. Didn't mean to imply that his version was correct... But how much of a difference are we talking about?

JabaliHunter

I am not pissed with you but with all the people who keep changing thing.

In the past, other gunsmiths (Jeffrey, Schuler etc al) were able to make guns that worked - and fed correctly from the magazine - which I think is the biggest issue.

It seems that some people can't do it right so they want to change the case (by adding a rim to it) so it is easier.

Well there are enough 500Jeffrey's built here that work that were copied from an Original 500Jeffrey that shows if the gunsmith is up to speed it can be done.

So sorry for flaming you, I was more flaming the changers !!!
