Hi,

I have now purchased the candidate for my DR sxs project.



This is a cal.20 HAWK that is probably made in Turkey







My aim is to have a low pressure cartridge, .284 to .366
I will keep the shotgun barrel set and build new from scratch

Slow start up with drawings to be made and collecting info on parts needed.

More as it goes.....

I have now decided to build my barrelset in cal 45-70, low pressure and a lot of bullets/loads to choose from.

Will start drawing some lines in cad on the block and start looking for suitable barrels from European supplier as there are export problems from US.

mickey, why are you asking if we can shoot 30-40?

Tecno,
Good choice! I think you will find that the 45/70 does everything you need it to do. It should handle everything up to and including large Moose with ease. It is a very useful cartridge.

Hi BobH,
I hope that I have made a good choice, been poking around for a while now reading and trying to understand and digest all information. It looks very much to be a useful caliber for the hunting we do over here in Sweden with large moose and wild boar as big game. I do belive that the 'knock' from these heavy bullets will do better on our game rather than light and fast.

Does anybody here have any experience as regards barrels from Pac-Nor? The price on their barrels seems to be reasonable.

Hi, is not pac-nor from the us? Or do you have someone in europe selling them, if so who?

I used adam&bennet barrels from midway, it took me about 5 months to get them. Also chambered for 45-70, its as sheap as it gets in reamers and reloading supply.
What load are you going to use?

Hi Andreas,

Pac-Nor from US, have not found any low priced barrels yet in Europe. Maybe I can get a deal on LW but not clear on this yet and there are some others too that I am awaiting a deal on.

I looked at midway but cannot find anything at reasonable prices for 45-70, I am all ears so any suggestions where to look?

What load, dont know yet as its too far away What are you using?

Im using 55grs of varget over a 400gr speer. I havent cronoed it but its probably around 550m/s. I will messure it in a couple of days and also shoot it in a bunch of old newspaper to see how the bullet performes.

I have used a number of Pac-Nor barrels and have been very pleased with them. They are good quality barrels and worthy of consideration for your project.

Your choice of chamberings is excellent. The .45-70 is a fine cartridge.

Update

Have been lurking for a while and been looking for available parts on this side of the pond (Europe)

All aspects taken into account it looks like I am going to build a semi-wildcat based on 8x57IRS and the new caliber is 9,3x57R to be named 57RSE or 57IRS.

All in all the 45-70 is much more expensive in the long run compared to what I can get hands on as regards need parts for 9,3x57, barrel blanks - reamers - dies - cases - bullets

If you intend to use your DR for large game, I think I would stick with the .45-70 cartridge. You can run anything from 300 grains to over 500 grains. I reload them quite inexpensively. There are alot of good moulds too, if you want to cast your own bullets.

wow, over a year...

Sorry guys, but I have been off list for a while due to many reasons.

This project has been on hold off as I have had a lot of other things to do.
I will continue this project over the winter and have been working on purchasing new
tools for this project.

New reloading tools have been ordered from CH4D as well as a reamer from Manson for
my 9,3x57RSE and go-no go gauges. I have a new set of 8x57JRS tools from CH4D that I
planned to modify but decided to go for a set made by Dave as he has the knowhow on
making these tools and same drawings sent to Dave Manson for making the reamer.

Hopefully I will get a new(bigger) milling machine in December/January so more parts
can be ready soon. Still need a steady rest to my lathe for barrel preparations,
hopefully I will have it here in December.

Barrels are here so I will get some updates as regards pictures as well.
