I would like to buy a leupold scope and have narrowed it down to either a VXIII at $400 or the VX 7 at $1300. Is the VX 7 worth three times the money or would I be better off with the VXIII.

The 2.5-8x35mm VX-III is such a fine hunting scope I feel no need for improvement. Probably sometime I will try a 1.5-5x20mm VX-III (also $400), because I like the looks of the straight tube on some classically-styled guns. However, in my opinion, higher-priced scopes offer no meaningful advantage over Leupold VX-III scopes.

I agree. I have several VXIIIs and find them all very high quality and ideally suited to rifles used for hunting. I have a 1.5-5 VXIII on my Ruger M77 in .458 lott and it is holding up very well.

I agree. My VXIII 2.5-8x with B&C reticles in great. My Swarovski 2.5-10X 30mm is also great & I see the advantage only in the greater magnification & a bit of advantage in low light right on dusk. A Leupold VXIII in 3.5-10X would also be great I guess. I do not shoot at game beyond about 400 yards (done it only once at that range) & so the VXIII 2.5-8x with B&C reticles is all I will ever need. I actually prefer the VXII 2-7X for some of the rifles & the 1.5-4X for the light weight or medium bore rifles like the 358 win.

I agree and own and use 3 of the above and they do the job extremely well for my deer hunting in the thicker bush of Victoria.
I doubt if anyone could tell the diff in the originally mentioned scopes and thus cant see that the three times price diff is worth it.

I've always had trouble with vxIIIs with getting the target and the cross hairs both in focus at the same time.
I never had this problem with the IIs though.
I prefer the Zeiss in both the Conquest and the Davari to the Leopold.

Agree with the other comments for several reasons--one being the 7 is heavier and therefore greater chance of shearing mounting screws..secondly, the III is a very good scope..I own close to 20 of them on various powers and adjustments..on my last trip to Africa--got to the range and both scopes needed NO adjustment after the long flight and gorilla airport crew..think that speaks quite well--in addition that is the 4th flight over for both of those scopes..
My PH had concern as to light gathering in early morning and late evening hours--not to worry..had NO problem what so ever..
As to the 1.5 to 5 VXIII--have it as well and also works really well with no problems on my .375 H&H..but for light gathering I do prefer the 1.75 to 6 as it has a bit larger objective lense..

Hi, guys! Anyone here have any experience with the Bushnell Elite 4200 1,25-4X24 IR? I am considering this scope, and trying to compare it to the Leupold VXII/ -III in low magnification.
Best regards

While I don't have experience with that scope--you may wish to review the tests SCI did on about 20 scopes used for dangerous game in the past year--all were shot with 60 rounds in an unbraked .460 Weatherby...personally, in my experience and friends as well, you can't beat the VX-III for what it is...

I am not sure if you can find it on the SCI web site or not--or if you can contact them regarding getting reprints..when I have a minute I will check and get back to you..

John Barsness has done tests on Rifle magazine - check the Jan - Feb issues at the back & you will get the full list of articles for the year. He liked the Bushnell Elite 4200 1,25-4X24 on a medium bore rifle. I do not think it was an IR.
