Sorry I do not know how to do a direct link to the link but check out www.shootingtimes.co.uk and then follow the features video link on the testing of the Giles Whittome built 2 bore single hammer rifle

A 2500 grain bullet seems awfully small for a full fledged 2 bore. A true 2 bore at 1.325" diameter should be using a 3500 grain round ball. I would like to see the full article.

Ken

Later today I will try and scan the article, if there is someone willing to post it I can then e-mail it to them so all can read it, I would do it myself but am a computer idiot without the first clue.

The bore size resembles more a "true" 4 bore diameter than a 2 bore, the case is based on the old Holland 2 bore shotgun cartridge. The article gives further infomration and is 3 pages in length

Jonathan

Somebody, please post for JT., I would really like to see the entire article. Does it mention bore diameter or the muzzle velocity? I have a black powder 2 bore being made, with a 36" barrel, and a full 2 bore diameter 1.325". It will shoot 3500 grain balls. It should be completed in October. It is a black powder gun.

The video was interesting, showing the 16 dram charge in the 26 pound gun & light bullet/ball not kicking any where as badly as the .577 T-rex, not probably as badly as Huble's 12 and 8 bore heavy load rifles would.
: The loads seemed more appropriate to a normal 4 bore load.
: Having said that, I would not shoot them - getting too old and beat up for that sort of punishment, any more.
: Indeed, an 8 pound .505 Barnes Supreme probably kicks harder & one of those was enough.

Article says it was a 12 dram load, not a 16 dram load.

bigdog,
is your blackpowder gun going to be a traditional side hammer gun and who's the maker?

Yes, Steve Zihn from Wyoming is the maker.

The video shows shooting the 16 dram load as well.
: Of course, we all know 16 drams is a normal full load with a 4 bore, not a 2 bore.

Hi Ken

I finally got it scanned and sent to Schmankungulo a day or two ago, maybe he is away right now I have got it in my e-mail ready to go if someone has the know how and time to post it for me that would be a real help. Sorry for the delay.

If I get time later today I will get a photo of the 2 bore round next to a few original versions of the 4 bore for comparison, again it would really help if some one with more grey cells and time than I could kindly post it for me, it may add to the interest a little.

Regards

jonathan

A fairly respected guy over on AR says the gun actually has a bore diameter of 1.052" and is actually a 4 bore. The article says a TKO of 700. It comes out to a 3000 grain bullet at 1550 ft/sec for 16000 ft.lbs of energy. That is almost twice the energy of my Owen 4 bore loads and the guns weigh about the same. It sure doesn't look like that gun kicks much for that kind of load to me. Powder wise it would take about 20 drams to get that velocity. Maybe the clip showing them shooting the 2 bore is the 12 or 16 dram load??? Anybody know for sure?

Ken bigdog I sent you the article via email ..

Article "says" that at the big end bore size is "erratic" , IOW not standardized I presume ..

Article does say that the true 4 is 1.052" and true 2 is 1.350" ..

This 2 is actually a four as it is a 1.052" bore ..

So why call it a two ..

I would really like a four , I shot one , a front stuffer , many moons ago and was a blast ..

I got the email, thank you very much. The article stats that the cartridge is 4.5" and is 1.135" at the mouth and1.180" at the head. So the gun is actually bigger than a true 1.052" 4 bore but much smaller than a true 2 bore at 1.35" diameter. It says it is the largest recognized sporting rifle in the world. I guess my 2 bore black powder with a 1.35" diameter and 36" octagon barrel will give it a run for it's money! According to the article, the 2500 grain bullets were rated at a TKO of 544. This is the bullet weight that they test fired. So at 1.180" diameter, the velocity should be right at 1300 ft/sec. My 4 bore gets 1480 ft/sec with 2000 grain bullets. So recoil looks similar to my 4 bore double.
