Ruger 77 converted to .505 Gibbs

I just happened to see this on GunBroker.com. It's a Ruger 77 Magnum that has been converted to .505 Gibbs. It may be of interest to someone.

I have nothing to do with the rifle or the seller and am not promoting the sale in any way. Just thought it was interesting.

Curl,

My guess is that the stock on the converted M77 will last about a nano second under that amount of recoil. A disaster waiting to happen. No secondary recoil lugs. Hmmmmmmmm.

Interesting also in that it has been re-bored from the .416 tube and not had a new barrel fitted. I agree that that stock needs much more reinforcement than the standard factory finish, I imagine it will be on the light side for the calibre also, interesting nonetheless

Just wondering - do you think if the action is properly bedded, there is really that much risk?
Don't you think the existing recoil lug as well as the barrel band sling swivel add some measure of resistance to recoil damage?
Also, does a .505 really have that much more recoil than the .416? Having never owned or shot a .505, I wouldn't know. My .416 has a recoil lug but the swivel ahead of the forend. My .500 has no recoil lug and no swivel through the stock either.

I get 100 ft lbs of recoil in a 10 lb 505 Gibbs (which is probably about what you have) shooting 600g bullets at 2150, compared to 58 ft lbs for a 416 Rigby shooting 400g bullets at 2400 fps. I had an extra recoil lug put on my 375 and had it glass bedded. My stock is too pretty to have it split...
