BSA Lee Speed No 1 .303
      #105507 - 18/05/08 09:16 PM

Hi all.......new to this site. I have owned a BSA No 1 Lee Speed Conversion in .303 calibre for about 21 years. I paid $140 NZD for it back then. I took it out shooting and flogged the hell out of it. One day I took it in to a Gun Smith who nearly died when he saw it! He said he would strip it and clean and oil it and I was to take it home and put it in the wardrobe and forget about it. He also said if I ever wanted to sell it he wanted first option on it. He said he would never own a .303 except for this one. Any way I moved to Australia 13 years ago and bought it with me. Every one who has seen it that knows anything about firearms wants to buy it. Shoots very very accurately.
Now I dont want to sell it but I would love to know some history about it.
Here is the overview from the Gun Smith who appraised it in NZ many years ago.

BSA No 1 Lee Speed Conversion in .303 calibre.
Serial 3708.
Re barreled in 1959 with a Heavy duty MK 111 barrel.
Fitted with a Lyman aperture rear sight and Lyman front ramp.
Bolt handle has been spooned.
Magazine has been cut down to a 5 Round.

Can any one give me any information on this rifle or point me in the direction of a book on the history of these rifles?

regards Scott

Many of the guys on this forum, including myself, like the Lee Speeds. Unfortunately, I don't know about any books on them. I also wish one existed. How about posting pictures?

Your rifle is not factory original and has been modified somewhat ,you may have a nice shooter but not very collectable , try Skennertons book "The Lee Endfield Story" he has a bit on the Lee Speeds.

Bubbleboy,

There are many of us here who would be glad to post the pictures for you if you mail them to us. As the official pesterer for pictures on these forums, I must remind you that if you were dating Keira Knightley you would want to show her off on your arm. Lovely guns are like beautiful women - meant to be showed off.

Welcome to the Nitroexpress forums and good hunting! Lee Speeds have a special place in all our hearts over here.

Bubbles:
Look forward to seeing the photos, another hopelessly addicted Lee Speed junkie here too!

Shame about the replacement barrel. One of the nicest features of the No.1 pattern is the full-length flat-top rib, I don't suppose they went to the trouble of salvaging that and refitting to the heavy Mk.III tube?

One of my LSs has a retro-fitted heavy barrel, but it was a bog-standard No.3 pattern originally so can probably be put right anytime if I so desired. Shoots very well though, and the first centrefire I actually owned! It was given to me at age 13 by my father, so it can stay as it is for a while!

Thanks mate...just emailed the pics to you.

Marrakai...no I dont have the original barrel and it is as seen in the photos which should be posted soon. I bought this for $140 off my first boss as he didnt have enough money to pay me for work. I have had it 20 years now. My first centre fire too!
