New look for a Baikal
      #104386 - 06/05/08 10:05 AM

Made and installed a rib on my Baikal today. I left enough clearance for barrel adjustment, but tight enough not to move or rattle. Material-acetate (delrin).

Hi Dale,
I didn't take any pics of it, but since I have two of these guns, I will be making another rib (or two). The front site block is a real bear to remove. It was a tight press fit and cross pinned. I had to slightly warm it and drive it off with a brass rod that I turned to fit. Making the rib was definately the easy part.

I just spoke with the folks at CDNN and they still have quite a few of these in stock. Price has gone up slightly to 299.00. Still seems like a good deal. Any info on shooting these and accuracy?

I took one of my O/U Baikals out last week. I had a three or 4 different factory loads 150gr to 180 grain. The top barrel out of the box shot high and to the right and the bottom barrel shot a little low and to the left. It would be unfair to judge the accuracy on the variety of rounds that I was shooting. I just wanted to experience shooting a double rifle.
I have to say that the top barrel was quite comfortable to shoot, while the bottom barrel as a bit harsh through my tee shirt.
The sights are not the easiest to see, plus the slot in the rear sight needs to be opened wider in my opinion. I am ordering 11mm rings and am going to scope the gun with a low power scope. I will use a laser sight to bring the point of impact closer befor burning through my next bunch of ammo. It should be great on boars and deer.
All in all, they are a great deal for the $279.00 that I payed for them
Just wanted to say that I am waiting for my SxS Baikal now. I should have it in a week.

George,

You have taken a very sound decision in more ways than one. Christian Ducros, one of France's finest gunmakers, uses Baikal actions (which he modifies heavily, of course) to build some of his masterpieces on. I also keep hearing about a planned project in the UK to rebuild Baikals and offer tough, budget price but fancier guns there.

The Baikals are superbly reliable guns and some TLC is bound to make them much more attractive. Prof Higgins and Eliza Doolittle, if you ask me.

Good hunting!

Mehul,

I finally located a shop that must have ordered quite a few SxS Baikal Double Rifles. I ordered mine for $914.00 which included shipping. If anyone is interested in one the name of the shop is Lewis Arms in Bow, NH. Google the name and their website comes up, but they do all their gunsales by email, phone or face to face. No internet storefront or guns listed on the site.

Until I build my paradox gun and double rifle, I am going to enjoy the Baikal as my first SxS double. I am really exiced about getting one.
I am disapponted with the 11mm scope rail that is installed on the 1/4 rid of the Baikals. Except for some cheap air rifle rings and bases, quality steel rings seem to be limited to the CZ-USA rings. Unfortunately, they are almost non existant online or in the shops. I ordered two sets from a company in PA today online, but am waiting for confirmation. Lets hope that I don't strike out with them.

The addition of the rib improves its look quite a bit. I believe similar are available for the Valmets, and I do plan to get a couple to try out myself.

NitroX,
Their #26 scope mount fits the Marocchi Finnclassic 512 after "rounding" the recoil stop slightly. The front lever lock of the mount only "half locks" the gun's integral base because the base tapers to the rib, at least at the 12 gauge barrels I have. This didn't created any mount unlocking problems after firing a lot of heavy slug loads.
The MAK mount that is designed specifically for the Marocchi is a more elaborated one but it cost me 6 times more.
Lefteris.

Dresses it up quite a bit! I have excellent luck so far with my Baikal BBF 12ga/7X57R. I used a decent quality mount for a 22lr grooved receiver with 1" rings, and all has held so far.

Thanks. I wasn't referring to scope mounts but the addition of a fake rib.

Mount information may come in handy one day though.

I have a set of Leopold 1" rings for 11mm rimfire mount coming from Midway. They should do fine. I also ordered a few sets of CZ rings in 11mm. I don't know the status of that order yet.

I remember the first time I brought a paycheck home to my new wife some 30 odd years ago. She grabbed it out of my hand and said "I don't ever want to see you with one of those in your hand again". And since then I haven't!
