The correct weight for a "Nitro Express" rifle?
      #104171 - 04/05/08 12:35 AM

First off I'd like to say hello to everyone on forum. Now for the question.

What would be the minimum and maximum weight for a NE Rifle ranging from the .450 NE to the .700 NE Calibers?

Roughly,
470 nitro--9.0 to 10 lbs
500 nitro--9 to 10.5 lbs
577 nitro-- 11.5 to 13lbs
600 nitro--12.0 to 14.5 lbs
700 nitro--16.0 t0 18lbs

I know you don't mind a bit of recoil Bigdog, but I believe that your maximums may be most peoples minimums.
I personally would not wish to fire a 9lb 500NE.

Would it be safe for the garden run human to add 2 lbs to Bigdog's range of weights?

That's the correct weights according to several discussions I have read. However, if that is theory, it sure may not be comfort, speaking at least from the standpoint of the largest round I normally shoot, the 500NE.

To be comfortable I would agree with some of the other comments and say that for those of us who appreciate keeping our shoulders intact, and our middle fingers on the shooting hand unbruised, I'd add some weight. A half pound, if properly balance, for the 500. That is especially so with the 577, as I's start at 13 and feel more comfortable adding about 12 ounces. My own 577 shooting 'normal' loads is that weight and I find it easy to manage. I have never tried a 'light' 600 and do not own any of that ilk. The one I did shoot was 15 lb 7oz and still was 'stout' to shoot.

Weight alone is not a cure if the balance is off (I noticed this in the Merkel 375, barrel heavy and unbalanced where the 470 and the 500 on the same 'chassis' balanced well with the larger bbls being lighter at the 'proper' end of the rifle. But properly distributed weight will dampen recoil. Dave

IMHO, Yes indeed.

My 450#2 weighs 11 1/4 and I enjoy shooting it. At 2 1/4 lbs less, I personally would dread taking it out of the cabinet. That would be less than my 9.3 x 62.

No problem guys. I was just stating appx. weights and going off of some of my stuff. My 577 weighs 11 lbs and 13 oz, and my 700 weighs 17 lbs and 1 oz, and the 4 bore weighs 26.0 lbs. A little heavier is fine too, that just what my stuff weighs.

I think 9 to 10 lbs would make a nice .375 or .400.

IMHO, fit along with weight is very important...I had a 10 lb .470 that did not fit me well which will increase felt recoil-and it kicked the daylights out of me...however with my Westley Richards at 10.5 lbs and proper fit allows me to shoot lots of rounds with no adverse effects...

I have shot several 500 and 577's that didn't kick me like that .470 did...

So an 11 lb 470 Capstick would be a little on the heavy side?

100% agreement. Late late year I tried out a Ferlib-built Dakota badged 375 Flanged DR. Now the weight and the chambering (the rimmed half brother of the 375 H&H) should have made for a relatively mild recoil. I have a Ferlib round action DR hammergun in 9.3X74R, virtually the same weight and a round that is fairly close in normal recoil to the 375.

Now, this particular gun had the stock cut back severally to allow it to be sold to a small woman. She sent it back and the company was trying to sell it rather than restock. Five rounds and I switched over to my other Ferlib. The Dakota felt like a 470, not a 375 Flanged. The Ferlib had its usual firm but reasonable recoil.

Cutting the stock back had drastically altered the line, and therefore the feel, of the recoil. So the comments about fit are clearly accurate. Dave

Why don't members here post the ACTUAL weight of their doubles as a guide instead of theory.

That way we will see what the gun makers actually made them as!

List the maker, the calibre/cartridge and the weight please. Thanks.

OK, I'll start:

Jeffery .400 3-inch BLE, 24-inch barrels, 10 lbs even. Perfect!

Manton (John Wilkes) .470 BL non-ejector, 26-inch barrels, 11lbs 2 oz. A tad on the heavy side perhaps, but nice to shoot.

John Wilkes .375 NE (2 1/2-inch case) BL non-ejector, 26-inch barrels, 10 3/4 lbs. Way too heavy for the chambering!

Greener .577-65-650 BL non-ejector, 22-inch barrels, 10 1/2 lbs. About right, but could be up to 1/2-pound lighter.

And the oldies:
Alex Henry 20/.577 Express, ULH, 28-inch barrels, 11 lbs even.
Rodda (W&C Scott) .500 No.2 'Cordite Express', SL non-ejector, 28-inch barrels, 9 lbs 10 ozs.
Tolley .450 x 3 1/2 Express, TLH, 28-inch barrels, {Oops, forgot. Will re-weigh and edit later!}
Kavanagh 12-bore 3-dram Howdah Rifle, ULH, 22-inch barrels, 8 lbs.

Ha my Jeffery in .450 No.2 is about 13 lbs. Heavy but makes it nicer to shoot. Well balanced but still doesn't weigh that much when carrying a long way with a good sling.

Could be a pound or two lighter.

Sixgun,

I like 577's to be in the 14 pound range:))) Easy to carry and easy to shoot.

Well I will defer to some one who might have a good idea on how to build a Double.
Holland & Holland list the following weight guide
.300 H&H 8lb 10oz
.375 H&H 9lb 6oz
.500/465 H&H 10lb 2oz
They also list the following built guns for sale
.470 10lb 11oz
.375 Flanged 10lb 2oz
.300 11lb
.300 9lb 14 oz
.577 15 lb
I might add that I have a 458 lott built on a Sako action that weighs 8.65 pounds with scope and NEEDS WEIGHT. I also have a CZ Lott at 9.4 with out scope not to bad but still light perhaps a heavey scope might help. My Kimber .375 weighs in at 9.3 with scope.
Bill

Agree--in those I have fired that were much lighter--12lb range--not very pleasant to shoot..however in the 14 to 15 lb range--not bad at all..
