Load Ideas for a Greener/Martini 577 3"
      #104069 - 02/05/08 09:36 AM

The nice man in brown just dropped off a lovely Greener-built Martini action single shot, chambered in a 577 BPE 3"I just acquired from Kirby at Vintage Doubles. The bore is mint and I am anxious to go out and shoot it.

Any ideas on nitro for black target loads for this elder citizen. (The gun as well!) I am just going to punch paper at modest range and, as it is a single shot, 'regulation' is not going to be an issue as the good ole Mark I eyeball over the leaf sights should allow regulation by elevation.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Dave

dnovo,
You may want to look up some of Ross Seyfried's old articles in past issues of "Handloader" or "Rifle". His formula is 40-45% of the original black powder weight in IMR or H-4198 and as much dacron as you can stuff in the case under the bullet. In my double I use 69 gr of 4198 and 17 gr of dacron under a 610 gr bullet from a NEI mould. I have found that I need to use mag primers in 577 cases to get reliable ignition. Be sure to use plenty of dacron, too little can lead to chamber ringing. The cheap pillow stuffing from wally-world works as well as any.
Hope this helps.

Dnovo; Some single shot 577-3" loads
NFB; 70.0g IMR 4198, 650g Woodleigh BPE bullet,
Fed. 215 MAG Primer and lots of Dacron. Very consistant
velocity. 1604FPS min. 1632FPS max for about 20 shots.

Black; 185g. 1 1/2FG Swiss black powder. Fed. 215 Mag. primer. 1/8" SPG lubed felt wad under bullet. 600g. Hawk RN. Very accurate. Averaged 1570 FPS. Very messy.

Good Luck. Sounds like a fun rifle.

Hey lucky you. I just got the first look at my 577 2 3/4 on a Martini Action. It is a complete finished barreled action but needs stocks fitted. Gotta wait until I find a house and get a shop set up to finish it out.

I was a bit surprised to see your gun is a 3 inch as I was lead to believe the 3 inch round won't turn the corner to load in the chamber.

I will be watching your results. Mine is not going to be used just for punching paper. I am going to find something to hunt with it.

I sold one that I started to build to a guy up in Oregon. Mine was a full 3" and it was fine with that length using Bell brass and Barnes 750gr Solids.
I believe that he still posts on the AR forum under Bill/Oregon, or something similar. You might cruise over there and see if you can contact him.
