Finally got to go shoot one of my Ken Owen 4 bores
      #103831 - 29/04/08 02:09 PM

I had time to shoot one of my Ken Owen 4 bores the other day.I shot six rounds free standing at about 45 yards. I had one flyer and put the other 5 in a group of 4.5". Not great shooting, but for the first time out I was pleased. The 4 bore is heavy, but I would not call it punishing. Recoil is a lot, but doable. I hope to get better with more practice. I am taking out my left handed one next time to see how it does.I have to admit that I would not want to haul it around all day at 26 lbs.

Bigdog - were you shooting 16 drams (437gr.)?

Bang away! What bullet diameter do the Ken Owen guns use and a second to Daryl are you using BP?

Actually, Ken has these rounds loaded with 116 grains of blue dot. I did not chronograph the loads, but that load should push a 2000 grain naval ordinance bullet to 1480 ft/sec for about 9725 ft. lbs of energy. I am sure the gun could handle hotter loads, but why? This load is safe and manageable and still a pretty good kicker.Sorry, but I was by myself and did not get any pictures. I will have some one take some next time. Thanks

BP ballistics or even a bit better. Bravo! Now, try the 16 dram load with the lighter round ball and see what Selous was complaining about. Glad it's your shoulder, not mine.
: Smokeless powders have taken much of the sting out of these big ones.

I am actually saving my shoulder for my black powder 2 bore that should be done in October sometime! The 4 bore is no pussycat when it comes to recoil though.

Remember WW Greener's test on recoil using his recoil machine. He was only using a light 12 dram charge in the 4 bore, which registered enough over his machine's max weight of 200 pounds, that it broke the machine. Yeah - I'd say the 4 bore's probably kick a bit. Sounds as if 16 drams would be lots of fun - to watch.

I went out today and demolished a poor unsuspecting tree stump at 60 yards today. I had 3 other guys with me and ammo, but they didn't want to shoot the 4 bore. The flame was 2' long and about a foot in diameter. The stump was 14" in diameter and afoot high. After 6 shots, there wasn't much of it left. That 4 bore does make a big boom! Actually, I think the 700 Searcy has a sharper kick than the 4 bore, of caarse it is a 9 lb lighter gun. I love it.

I had Ken make me his last 4 bore over the last couple of years. It is left handed with 24" barrels. I also own what used to be Safari Kid's Mastodon, I did a cash/gun trade with him a couple of months ago. The mastodon shoots great even for being made for a lright hander. I hope to take my "beast" out in a couple of weeks to see how she shoots. Needless to say there are less guns in my safe than there used to be, but the ones in the safes have grown bigger!

Bigdog
You have all these fine guns BUT NO digital camera?
Get a Canon G9 camera and take some pictures.
Share these rifles with us.

Cheers,

André
