Steve,
Don't lettem scare you off. I love my 600JDJ on a Ruger #1. I shoot primarily 2 loads, a mild cast bullet and a heavier load with the Woodleigh 900grn. It weighs 11 lbs

And also a ?gracoil recoil reducer on the butt of the stock!!

Yowsers!! I think we are looking at a real proverbial "mother" of recoil here.

What does the recoil calculate out to??

Love the rifle 600, its just a bit big for me. I am not a fan of muzzle brakes at all, and I dont have one on any of my rifles. I am looking at two if not more recoil reducers, and a good quality recoil pad, which should help alot, plus getting the weight upto about 13 pounds will be helpful.

My 470 NE Hagn actioned Jack Haugh was designed with 3 mercury recoil reducers in the butt. Putting a muzzle brake on it would have been like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa. However, I must say that while they are noisy buggers, muzzle brakes are the most effective means of reducing felt recoil. My Reeder Beasts use some very effective brakes in conjunction with intelligent stock design and recoil reducers to make what would otherwise be an unmanageable tool into one that can be handled properly -- but still demands your attention or it goes one way and you the other. Hi guys well I now have the permit for the .577. However some more knowlageable people than me about all matters ruger number 1 have raised some doubts about the saftey of haveing a .577 built on a number 1 action. The argument is that there simply is not enough meat around the chamber once the threads are cut to be safe. The gunsmith I have chosen thinks it will be fine, even for full power loads, but I am wondering still, as I dont need a rifle blowing up in my face.

I see some posters on this thread have .577's and even a .600 on ruger number 1's, so I'm looking for advice about what you did to make sure the rifle was safe, I wont be loading hot, maybe 2000fps at most with a 650 grain bullet, but still I would like to have an action safe enough to fire the full power nitro loads if I ever need to, or if the rifle is ever sold to sombody else who may use factoey ammo.

Am I safer to trade the barrel and dies and go with a .500 Nitro express instead? This issue has me thinking pretty hard now about the rifle and its conversion to .577

Thanks
Steve

Steve
If you don't feel comfortable doing it in .577 then
do the .500 or someother NE round. I would not worry about
what people say you can or cannot do. Mostly it's just
talk. I have shot numerous full 750gr loads in mine. The
guy I got it from never shot anything but full loads and
then some while he had it. The No.1 is incredibly strong.
The chamber wall thickness for the last inch or so where
the barrel is threaded into the receiver is not a problem
provided you cut decent, tight threads and your smith
knows what he is doing. It is a bit disconcerting to
look down at the loaded action and see a bit of brass rim
protruding above the breech block, but you get used to
that.
And, you can always send it to the Birmingham/London
proof house and be real certain.
Good luck whichever way you go
Raff

Ditto what Raff said. I have run numerous 2000 fps 900grn loads in my 600. The gun will take more than the shooter most of the time :-). One thing you want to consider on any of the large rimmed cases is having the safety machined down into the tang so the rims don't get caught on ejection and just lay in the feed tray. My 577-600 did this until I modified it. I know Hamilton Bowen offers this touch and while not cheap, I would get it done if I was making one of these big guys again.

Raff, and 600 thanks for the info, my smith said it would be fine, and he does a lot of work with the number 1's, and big bore rifles are his main line of work so he should know what he is on about. I was just wanting to make double sure before I went ahead with the build.
Thanks
Steve

What 600 said about the safety....me too. Best thing
you can have your smith do after the barrel job.
Good luck
