What to do?

Latest problem to solve with the .50-90 project: I can drill/tap a hole in the buttstock socket, wood screw in the wrist; add a tang, drill/tap both ends.. Opinions?

I would think the first. It looks like it would be anchored partly to the frame and mostly likely the stronger option. With the second, looks like you're going to have inlet the wrist a bit. Why work harder at it, go with the first option.

Just an opinion, but I wouldn't want the sight screwed to the action at one end of its base and to the stock at the other end.
Those type sights are quite high and if bumped or knocked can apply a fair amount of leverage to their base so I would want it attached as strong as possible.
If it was my rifle I think I'd be fitting a tang to the rear of the action so that the sight base is held by two screws which fit into threaded holes in the tang.
The tang would need to be a permanent part of the action and therefore may require fitting by welding and would also need to be secured to the stock with a woodscrew at its rearend.

It's my opinion that sights of any kind need to be mounted as solidly as possible and especially so with tall adjustable peeps like the one in your photo.

So yeah, as you say, add tang and drill/tap both ends would be best IMO.
Great project by the way.
Best of luck and please keep us all informed as you progress.

Just a thought while looking at your photo.
The stock wrist appears to be fairly short in the picture.
Will you have enough clearance at the peepsight base and the webb of your hand between thumb and forefinger, considering the recoil of that chambering?

Yes I thought the same. Looks to me like you are going to get a sore hand out of firing it.

Also does the sight get in the way when loading. Give it a practice run a few times to see.

I no expert at all at gunsmithing but I think Alan's opinion on how to afix the sight sounds wise. Afixing it to both action and stock does not sound stable.

Really appreciate the responses, folks. It's nice to have varying opinions when you're on "uncharted ground"! Yes, I believe there will be enough room for my hand under recoil, but just... I don't think I could move the sight back entirely to the wrist, without inletting it level-and even at that, it'd probably be a close thing... Also, the stock currently wears a pistol grip, which I am considering removing, and making it a straight shotgun-style... That decision is down the road a bit, though.
