Over .50 needs to be registered as DD?
      #10019 - 25/02/04 02:19 AM

There was another thread on another board with a gentleman who made a .95 rifle and some posters said he needed to have the rifle registered with ATF as a destructive device because it was over .50. I figured if anyone knew it would be you guys as some of you have rifles over .50. Now this doesn't have to do with the rifle it'self as that is all legal but to the size of the round it shoots. Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Edited to add a link to the thread so you can see the round and rifle

That is the .950 developed by JD Jones I believe.

Both the gun and the ammunition have to have ATF approval

All it takes is to classify it as a sporting round. It depends on the atf weenie doing the paperwork.

Does anyone know how that rule applies to the big boys? .577, .600, or even 505 or .500 Nitro?

Scrollcutter, those rounds that you mentioned are classified as sporting rounds. They are existing rounds and have been used for DG hunting and atf decided that they were indeed for sporting use. It's just with NEW rounds being developed, you have to get approval as to classification for sporting use. I hate that word, SPORTING. It's a term that klinton has abused over the miserable 8 yrs. that he was mishandling our affairs.
