Drilling vs Combo
      #77736 - 01/05/07 03:26 AM

I have a few combo guns and have been looking at drillings for some time. I just hasve not found the right drilling for me. My question is given you have both a drilling and a combo when do you use each?

Thanks
Doug

This is an easy one for me, i haven't used my combo for any "serious hunting" since getting my drilling...

I've limited experience, I grew up hunting with a Savage combo gun (22 and 20 guage) and I just bought a drilling.

From my limited experience, I'd say for serious hunting, especially where you are planning to use the shotgun the drilling wins hands down. However, if you had a nice combo gun with a good scope and a useful rifle caliber, and you were not that worried about using the shotgun much, I'd say the combo gun is handier, lighter, and easier to carry. They made great "backpacking" gun to breakdown and throw in a backpack.

I use a BBF combo or my cape gun when primarily hunting big game a bit more seriously. I use my drillings for most combination type hunts when a brace of blue grouse or chucker are just as welcome as a deer.

I also take the BBF with 12/9,3X74R and a second set of 9,3X74R o/u barrels when after moose or when bound for Africa, etc. It can be a difficult choice. I DO like having a third barrel with a slug, buckshot, or a 22 LR/mag insert. Bock drillings are ultimate meat gatherers, IMO.

A BBF with a quick in/out Kreighoff 22 mag insert for the shotgun barrel is a close second.

I have a Sauer und Sohn Drilling in 16/70/7x57R. I used it for almost all my hunting last fall on both small game and roedeer. I long wanted a combo, but saved and waited until I could afford a drilling. I've never regrettet since..! The Drilling has everything a combo offers, plus one more shotgunbarrel. This extra barrel can carry slugs if you want, and you then have a functional doublerifle with punch up to somewhere around 40-50m..

Most drillings, especially those in 16 and 20 ga are built with very good balance indeed - the handle almost like a shotgun. I used mine for upland fowl, aswell as rabbits with good results. I'd stay clear of the 12ga if you think of hunting fowl with it..

The drilling and the three barrels-two triggers need some use to get familiar with. It tends to be a little barrelheavy (especially if you choose long barrels) but stick with 60-63cm (and 16/20ga )and it's not that noticeable: I've shot more clays in one round at the range with my drilling than many of the others shooting there did with sporting model shotguns... It only comes down to finding a drilling that fit you!

If you add a scope in a german claw-mount, you'll have a very versatile drilling, that might almost become you're only gun! I have, and I'm VERY satisfied

Doug
I have owned a combo gun 12 over 222, I now own a drilling 12x12x30-06, with scope in claw mounts, and a double rifle drilling in 9,3x74Rx9,3x74Rx20ga, with scope in QD mounts.

I really like the concept of a "combination gun" and use them when ever there are overlapping seasons of fur and feathered game.
I can sum it up like this.

A Combination gun is a perfectly good single shot shotgun, and a perfectly good single shot rifle.

A Drilling is a perfectly good double bbled shotgun, and a perfectly good single shot rifle.

A double rifle drilling is a perfectly good double bbled rifle and a perfectly good single bbled shotgun.

While it seems I have stated the obivious, think about it for a while... and figure out which would be the best choice for the hunting you do.

Do you want a rifle "around" while shotgun hunting... Or do you want a shotgun "around" while rifle hunting, or do you just want the sleekest lightest "combo" to carry with you while "bumming" around in the woods.

I do feel that ANY combo/drilling should have a scope fitted in QD mounts.

In fact the last few grouse I shot with my drilling in Idaho were killed with the scope still on the gun, and in Texas the last 2 turkeys, the duck and the squirrel shot with the shotgun bbl of my double rifle drilling were killed with the scope still on the gun.

Having a shotgun and a rifle "on the same gun" is an awsome set up.

My wife hunts with her drilling a 12x12x30/06 most of the time as it is her favorite hunting gun.

They all are great hunting guns.

I was originally looking for a single gun, however I have come to the conclusion that I will need multiple calibers (ok I want multiple calibers) I currently have a 12/222, 12/30-06 and I am looking to acquire shortly a 12/243. Given a lot of the hunting here in Texas is predator, deer or hog I like the versatility that the combo offers. I am rethinking the combo vs double rifle in 30-06 and thinking about looking for a 9.3x74r in double rifle...

I looked long and hard for a drilling but could not find one that fit my requirements for what I felt was a fair price.

Thanks to everyone for the great insights and opinions.

Doug

I use my drilling for all and any hunts where I primarily will shoot with the shot gun barrels, for rabbits, red deer and other I use the drilling, when just walking about in the woods ie not realy hunting then I bring my combo.

In Sweden a combo is great when one hunts treed black bird in the forest and others like grouse, and quail. No shots at moving game. The combo can be said to be a single shot rifle with a shot barrel attached.

The drilling has a bigger use when a moore shifting hunt is made, a driven hunt or with dogs for fox, rabbit, red deer, boar (if you are really lucky and have a drilling regulated for brenneke) and so on, I find my drilling to be a shotgun with a single shot rifle barrel attached.

With these approaches one can moore easily find what one kind of gun one needs the most and select accordingly.

I am currently looking for a 16/70 +9,3x74R drilling preferably with clawmounts already put on it.

It will make a good second to the Merkel I already have.

Best regards Chris.

I have a Sauer 3000 12x12x30/06. I like it. Its a nice gun (though to be honest I would have preffered a European calibre). Heavier cal too.

But in my experience, it is a gun (and I use the word deliberately) to take, when you are chasing small game (rabbits, foxes, game birds) with the chance of a pig or deer. If it was the other way round I would just take a bolt rifle. And blow the odd rabbit of fox to bits with a .30 cal or equivalent. But if you are duck shooting and spot a pig at 150 meters, your still in the game. If your pig shooting and have 15 pigs run out at 50 meters from right to left, you fire once....miss (or hit).....and the game is over.

If pigs appear and itīs legal, it aint in Sweden one just slips two slugs in the shotgun chambers and youīll have three rounds to shot and collect pigs with.

A good drilling has the right shotbarrel adjusted to shoot poa with the rifled barrel at 50 some meters, ie one can then use the sights to shoot a aimed slug.

I have tried shooting slugs just over the front sight and have gotten pieplate accuracy at 50 meters, thatīs all right with me, over the sight I get shot and rifled barrel with in 2-3 inch at 50 meters.

Since ny drilling has an aimpoint mounted I just set the red dot on the intented target, gun does the rest.

OT I know but still god info.

Best regards /Chris
