Hello,

I'm new to this forum and look forward to being a member.

I'm also new to the world of fine weapons, all of my prior experience has been with commercially produced weapons. however, I recently inherited a beautiful combination gun from a very good friend who was an avid hunter and mentor.

The gun is 16ga over 8x57JR (.318 bore). Barrel markings show the maker to be Muchler & Sons, Nevenrade West. It is fully engraved with a stag scene on one side and a bird scene on the other. the stock has a spring open cartidge well. The scope mount assy is removable and there are both fixed and flip up rear sight blades for the open sights. I also have reloading dies, but have not found any load data.

This gun will not be a safe-queen, I will hunt with it regularly. My friend did not believe in owning any gun that he did not use, and I made the same pledge to his wife when she handed me tne Muchler. Basically, I am looking for any information I can find about this gun, gun-maker, and calibre.

First off, Welcome to the forums!

Sounds like you got a nice combination gun there.
Can you get some photos up so we can see it?

Images of the proof marks on the underside of the chamber end of the barrels and of the marks on the action flats will be especially helpful.

What is the action type?
Toplever, underlever, hammers or hammerless?

Show us the sights too.

Sounds like loading for the rifle should be pretty simple, Woodleigh makes a very nice 198gr jacketed soft point bullet for that bore size.

Do you know the chamber length of the shotgun tube?
The proof marks should answer that issue.
There is likely factory ammunition available for the 16ga end of feeding this gun.

Will,

The one member who should be able to help with this is PWM though he is currently on a long trek in the Himalayas. Send him a PM and if he checks his PMs, he should reply. He did tell me that he would be checking his mail and PMs here as well as on another forum and it might take a little time, but it should be worth trying.

Also, do post pictures of your gun here.

The new owner is now Mr ALOIS RAUL

powderweight:48,5 grains maybe start 5% less and look for pressuresigns

I noticed you provided some history on Wilhelm Müchler und Söhne. Hopefully you can also provide some history for me on Otto Geyger of Berlin. I have one of his guns but have been unable to find out much about the company. Any information you can provide would be much appreciated.

i am sorry,but i could not find any informations for this gunmaker. i have called two friends who know more than me about old gun manufactures (and have search on the Internet ) but the name Otto Geyger is also unknown by them ;-(
The company Otto Geyger of Berlin is not exist today.
if you take a stock,a barrel,an action and a trigger ,put all together,you can stamp your name on the ready rifle.....and thats what i think by your gun. Otto Geyger of Berlin sounds like a small gunsmith of the good old days of gun smithing here in germany. i am absolute sure,that this gun is from a very high quality,like the most off guns build in this time !!.Be proud off to have an absolute rarity rifle you can hunt with.
it would be nice to watch some photos from this rifle, can you post it here in the forum?
what is it chambered ?? 7x57R ??

Hello Gentlemen,

There is one O Geyger double rifle on auctionarms right now and while I can't remember where, they're is also another double rifle and two different shotguns on the different websights. I have looked at several Geyger guns, both double and bolt and and they have all been beautiful and well made guns. I once saw one that had a tree sight hook. I too would love to find more information on him.

good news !
i called around this morning on phone and find a man who knows a lot off Otto Geyger.He told me that Otto Geyger Rifles has been manufactured by Oskar Merkel in Suhl and they are all of very high quality.
Is there a little gotic "M " somewhere on the action?
Is there somewhere written "Mercator " on barrels ore action ?
He need all the stamps and signs on the gun.unfortunately he don't speak english.if you would send some pictures in good quality to me,also some pictures with all the stamps, i can show them to this man and will get closer information back to you.
