Martini Cadet rifle ........ any knowledgeable people on NE?
      #375035 - 10/03/23 07:37 PM

G'Day Fella's,

I was only again recently, reintroduced to the Martini Cadet rifle.
It had been a long time, since I had the pleasure of handling one.
I have never owned one, but was quite smitten by its good looks, simplicity and function/operation.
I had a search on here, for existing threads on them but found none(?).

FYI: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martini_Cadet

https://www.joesalter.com/category/products/Australian-Pattern-Martini-Cadet-Rifle-by-BSA-item-37060

https://enoughgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6631

https://sportingshooter.com.au/ask-uncle-nick/all-about-the-martini-cadet-rifle/

So, now I'm keen on getting one, and was looking for advice from anybody, on what to look out for, when buying one of these great little rifles?

I've got two.

A rebarrelled Martini Cadet in .222 Rimmed.

Another Victorian Colonial Police MC in .297/230. I need to get that one shooting.

I'd like to scope the .222 Rimmed.

I think my 2 Cadet actioned rifles are super, especially the .22 Hornet Ack. IMP. It's not a "K". The .17HMR is OK as well.
I chambered both of them. Local chap did the threading for me.

I'm no expert but I have a Sportco barreled .22 rimfire Martini cadet. my local gunsmith fitted a lovely scope mount and its super accurate and has accounted for many rabbits, hares and pigeons I have a friend who i would call an expert on all things Martini. he is in the process of building a 12 Bore rifle on a large Martini frame. and has built various calibers over the years on cadet actions and the full size actions. he agrees with me that its very difficult, if not impossible to find a Sportco barrelled cadet that is not accurate. so my advice, If you see Sportco martini at a good price, , just buy it and have fun.
I've had a couple of the 297/230 original cadets and I know that they are collectable and can be reloaded if you can find cases, dies etc, but for me its too much hassle unless you have really been bitten by the collector bug. There are a few guys in my club shoot cadet .310's in our Rook Rifle comp. they are easy to reload, cases dies and moulds are readily available and they're pretty accurate. not the prettiest action but you do learn to love them.

G'Day Fella's,

Thank You for that info Hendo, Very Much Apprciated!

Yes mate I agree, they may not be the prettiest of actions but I do have a facination, with their simple but very functional, mechanical mechanism, and its operation.

Homer,

Well, I neither claim to be an expert, nor very knowledgeable, but I did post a thread about my Martini Cadet five years ago:

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=314194&an=0&page=0#Post314194

Maybe this thread can be helpful to you. Post to it and bring it back to life!

Curl,

Nice post. Glad to reread it. Your Martini isa very nice looking rifle.

I have had two miniture, sporting martini, both take down with split receiver. One in 22LR and the other in 310 cadet. They are interesting rifles. Always intended to put a 17 HM barrel on the 22 martini. However, both ended up as trading stock.

G'Day Fella's,

Thank You CptCurl, for going to all of this trouble, to share this with us again.
I was surprised, that no articles were highlighted, when I did my search!
As mentioned by others (back then and again now), that is a great subject matter article.

Regards
Homer

G'Day Fella's,

FYI. Here is a video, of how one person, adapts a Martini Cadet action, to extract rimless cartridges.
I'm sharing this, more for the "it can be done" side of things, more than anything else.
