Rigby unveils new limited edition Falling Block rifle
BACK

Modelled on the late Victorian Farquharson rifles, London gunmaker John Rigby & Co. has just launched their first 10 new limited edition Rigby Falling Block rifles. After three years in the making, the rifle is built around a true Farquharson action, identical to the original patented John Farquharson design of 1875 and a strong match to the historic Rigby-made Farquharson rifles in the company’s historic ledger books.

Chambered in .416 Rigby No. 2, the rifle features a single trigger and top safety, with a 25-inch lightweight barrel – as per Rigby pre-war standards – with an integral rib and traditional London Best black finish. The rifle benefits from a standard front foresight with protective hood and rear sights regulated at 65 yards, with two folding leaf sights regulated at 150 and 250 yards.

Bespoke to the customer, the stock is built to client specifications and is modelled from hand-selected, grade seven deluxe Turkish walnut, finished with Rigby’s signature oil finish and a one-inch rubber recoil pad. Shaped with a classic pistol grip, with a cap box housing a spare front sight, the grip cap trap features a bespoke blue enamelled plate with serial number, created by Melissa Rigby, the great-great-great granddaughter of Rigby’s founder, John Rigby.

Finished with traditional Rigby “Rose & Scroll” pattern engravings on the action, with a case colour hardened finish as standard, customers also have the option to upgrade to bespoke engraving patterns of any design. A silver oval is also inlayed into the stock to add the client’s initials or crest.

RRP £39,950 (Export)

Beautiful gun, but I doubt any of them will ever be fired at game, sadly most probably will never get fired at all.

Beautiful indeed, I also do love the rose & scroll engraving; and as already mentioned by .260 Rem, possibly a true collector's item. No provisions already made for mounting a scope without altering the fine engraving; I assume that nowadays a single-shot in .416 should be for hunting dangerous game at "some" distance, not at 50 yards as one can afford with a double or bolt action rifle?

Well imo Rigby does it again excellently.

Some people claim new Rigbys are not to the standard of the old. Yes some models are not the same as the "old models".

Then Rigby produces something exactly to an old standard. Often the same people are still critical. Look at the Corbett replica creation and some naysayer comments.

The custom London Best shop can make exactly what you want. I assume

Then the complaints are - the price!!!

Well buy an over priced plastic Blaser then!

Btw I think $20,000 and over for a vintage M98 Rigby .275 is also ridiculous. I can't afford that. Often average walnut as well. I would get a custom plainly stock .275 M98 made up for one-third of that, I think. No name but the same style.

Now I admire Rigby for its innovation on older styles. The Mauser 98 rifles, once largely missing in the market for a decade or more. Some limited offerings of M98s by some Euro makers. Now in regular availability again. The Rising Bite doubles being made again as well. Now Farqhuarsons! Wow! Are they 100% the same? No idea.

Marketing innovation. The East African canvas tents. Later the Scottish tartan themes. The Corbett Commemorative India Tour.

Now a Farqhuarson styled single shot. Expensive! But if it sells well enough, does anyone care if those that can't afford it are upset? I can't afford it either. I like that it is being made even if I will never own one.

100 plus years ago an original Farquharson would have been beyond my farmers wallet for sure as well.

Beautiful new old rifle. And in a modern great "classic" cartridge, the .416 No. 2 Rimmed Rigby. If I ordered a Rising Bite double it would probably be the .416 No.2 Rimmed.

But wow!

By the way. I wasn't critising Roger's comment. I assume it would be like me. Not in my pocket.

A lot of these very fancy firearms end up in collections. Not in hunters camps. Sad IMO

While I fully understand the sentiment, the same may have been said about the "Gordon" Dixons ~130 years ago...
But thankfully that eccentric gentleman had the foresight (and the funds!!) to put together such a collection and keep them out of the hunting field.
Look at them now!

Many were made for Rajah's armouries. And these were not collections to gather dust and be gazed at. As I understand it, these armouries were often loaners to guests. Many of the our wonderful vintage doubles and singles were liberated from India in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.

Eventually these 200 or 300 lovely fine gun collections will also be liberated to the market when the collector's estate is liquidated. Some fine guns may actually enjoy their first shot.

I think it’s great to see Rigby building a new Farquharson rifle!
The pricing is quite high of course, but I also think these will go into private collections of some of their wealthy clients.
My hope is that they can eventually offer a lower priced option but we’ll have to wait and see if that’s the plan.

The actions not made by Mayfair engineering. They were made in Scotland using drawings of an original Rigby Farquharson in 500NE. The drawings were modified to have a strap safe as on the later PD actions. These rifles also retain the retracting striker aswell. Basically it's a pretty close copy of an original rifle using modern materials.
An awful lot of handwork has gone into making them which is why the quality is right up there as you would expect. As for the price, all if the rifles made so far have been sold so people out there can afford them. If you want this level of workmanship it cost a lot. It's not like building a Ruger #1 custom. These are in a completely different league.
For all the people that say they will never get shot,I think you might be suprised. They all shoot really well and some of them will end up going to Africa.
Hope that clears up a few things.

Best wishes

Mark

I have plenty of best quality rifles that I shoot.

P.S. In that caliber it will be quite a thumper - on both ends!

They are a bargain at US$49,937.50 since the UK pound is very low to the US dollar. They will become sensational collectors rifles and the prices will escalate.

They are rather lovely, but what I never understand is why doesn't the fore-end wood flow from the main stock. If I was building, or having such a rifle built I would choose a full rifle blank and lay it out like you do with a bolt action, and then cut out the section for the action. You also see this on many shotguns where the fore-end wood does n't match the stock. It's a small aesthetic thing but......

As to the £40,000 price point - how many man hours are in there?. In the UK minimum living wage is now £10 per hour and £50k annual salary is really not very much, and plenty of craftsmen will make substantially more than that in other trade. Fine guns have always been expensive.

Were I to contract for one I would opt for a less ostentatious engraving and wood. I’m a vintage hunting/shooting rifle type rather than a pure collectors investment sort.. ie: more of a “Best” as found in the 1880’s to 1910 heyday.

That said, this Rigby is a testament to the ability of present day “back in London” Rigby….simply stunning.

The actions were not made by Mayfair engineering. I had them machined here in Scotland then I assembled them. The barrels were made up with a solid quarter rib then I screwcut and chambered them, attached them to the actions and off they went to the London proof house.
I would ask people out there that before you comment on who made what in the British gun trade please make sure you have your facts straight.

Ok calm down, I didn't see your other post where you outlined in detail where and how they were made. Sorry if I offended you for repeating the same mistake, it wasn't intentional. I have been following Mayfair Engineering on Instagram and they have had many pics of the progress of their single shot action including regularly combining the term 416 Rigby No.2 with the pics. I therefore assumed (Obviously incorrectly) that they were making it. Thanks for pointing it out again.

By the way, do you know who is making the brass for Rigby in 416 Rigby No.2.

The Mayfair action is a sort of copy of a George Gibbs action with a side safety on it. It also has been simplified in doing away with the retracting striker and the shape of the original lever catch. I think the retracting striker is quite an important feature as it means if anything goes wrong with the primer the striker will never get stuck in it jamming the action.
The original Gibbs actions are beautifully made but the PD actions are more robust in my opinion. They were made in calibers up to 600 and were used by several well known makers of the time so really are a well proven design.
I'm not sure who makes the brass but can find out. The cases I've used have been pretty good. The brass is a good thickness and they're consistent on the dimensions.

Thanks Pug, the side safety should have been a dead give away for me as it features prominently in most of the Mayfair pics. I am normally a stickler for correct information but let the fact the Mayfair and Ian Clarke make so many components for the British trade get the better of my judgement.

Thanks for the information on both the new versions being made, very interesting. Does the company who made these actions for Rigby make gun parts for other companies as well or was it a first time venture for a local Engineering Company. If so they certainly did a great job.

If you could find out about the brass that would be appreciated, it would be interesting to see who it is. Hopefully the cartridge can make a bit of an impression on the public and get a reasonable following. Certainly a beauty.
