Thomas Bland Hammer Single Shot Rifle - Made 1890.
      #354031 - 04/06/21 09:40 PM

This morning I ran across a nice Thomas Bland single shot rifle.

It is currently for sale.

I don't own it. I'm not promoting it. I know nothing more about it than what I see in the listing.

These don't appear often, and it might be an opportunity for somebody to acquire a nice English break-open hammer single shot rifle. It classifies as an antique in the U.S., so it should be simple to import.

Here's a link: https://martinigunmakers.com/for-sale/thomas-bland-sons-44-40/

And here are the photos. I have archived them to the NE.com server.

I'm tempted myself, but I'm trying to pull back the reins. The years are creeping up on me.

It reminds me a bit of my Rigby; but in my opinion, it's not filed up quite as nicely. Still, it's a screamer. I like the caliber too.

Here's a link to my Rigby just for fun: John Rigby & Co. 40-70 Bottle Neck Single Shot Rifle #15130

Marvellous old rifle there Capt in very good nick as well!
Would be a great little stalking rifle, the old .44-40 is no slouch when in a LOOOOOONG barrel Any deer within 100 yards would be in very serious trouble.
As to the cartridges would they be NFB or BP loads only being dated back 1890's make rifle?
By the way Capt, was a real blast to see your Rigby SS again, was a fantastic thread that one, only to find it chambered in .40-70. Looks like the Pommie's like your side of things too!
Cheers

its a nice little thing

the 44/40 is maybe the border between toy cartridges and real rifle cartridges. the rigth thing for an afternoom with target shooting.

Depending on the strength of the rifle, if proofed for nitro,
the .44-40 can be loaded higher. Even a BP loading should run 1,200fps with a 200 or 220gr. bullet from that rifle.

Nice rifle but it appears "over-refinished". IMHO, the "refinsih" isn't subtle. I would rather have an a rifle in its original condition or, if refinished, more subtle work.

Personal opinions vary, of course. I think it looks marvelous and is a gun I wish was in my "room".
