Beautiful rifle Roger, but that scope mount still gives me the heebie-jeebies!

OK! OK! OK! I've taken it off, happy now?.....seriously though it was only a bit of mucking about to see what would work, I don't particularly like side-mounts, so I'll have to work out something that doesn't offend your delicate sensibilities "joking"

Side mounts were used in the 'classic period', as well, but I don't think I'd prefer one to a 'Vienna Snapper' or a claw mount.

Stoeger, 1939:

Fortunately, My M1910 had a claw mounted Gerard 'B' when Grand Dad bought it in Ceylon ca. 1931.
If it were bare, I'd probably leave it alone.

I guess I can see the lines of a top mount are "cleaner" but I like nice side mounts. Yeah I suppose they are the step children but they are classic too

There's a nice variety of (pricey) options on Ebay right now. The 'Vienna Snapper' set up with its fitted Kahles scope is seldom offered:

Kahles h/4 X 60 on Vienna Snapper mounts: Ebay Snapper

Griffin & Howe: Ebay G&H

Williams with o/s rings: Ebay Williams

Redfield with peep: Ebay Red Peep

Redfield w/o peep: Ebay no peep

Bit of a hybrid. Should be called "top/side mount". But the workmanship in these old mounts is fantastic. It's looking at things like this that sent me to technical school lo, those many years ago.

I replaced a Pachmayr with a....Tasco.

The Pachmayr had to be flipped up for each shot. Did put the scope nice and low though.
Tasco had built in rings and actually worked out fairly well.

Must be something to do with the geometry of the bolt handle? I've never had to do that with any of the Pachmayr's; I only flip to load. I never knew Tasco made swing mounts. The only other ones I've used are Weavers, but they're top mounts.

A stalking rifle for me is a single shot, not necessarily a break action - but preferably.

I use two different rifles for stalking; a merkel kipplauf 7x65 Rimmed and a merkel 210E combination gun (BBF) 6.5x55/12-70. Both with detachable scopes.
The former is very lightweight, about 5.6 lbs without scope and depending on scope the total weight is about 6.6-7 lbs. This rifle is ideal for stalking everything from roe to moose and boar in dusk and dawn. I also use it to hunt frome hides.

The combination rifle is more suited for stalking during daylight with the opportunity to take birds and small game with the shotgun barrel. I've also used it several times for small game driven hunts, but traditionally it's a stalking rifle. This rifle is heavier, about 7.9 lbs with the scope (a small leupold 1-4 in claw mount), but its nice balanced and a joy to shoot.

Here's a picture of the kipplauf and the last buck, taken during a stalk in a dense forest in august

I just looked up the term "stalking rifle" and found a variety of definitions, many being lightweight, medium caliber, bolt action rifles. Or, as in the modern American vernacular, a deer rifle!

Here is my deer rifle- pre 64 M70 Featherweight in .308 caliber.

Good for most big game, but not ideal for big dangerous game.
