Ruger No. 1 caliber for NA
      #33661 - 23/06/05 05:39 AM

Hi all,
I just picked up a Ruger 1B in 22-250 that I am thinking of having either rechambered/rebored or rebarreled. I also will have open sights installed and a front sight so recommendations there are also appreciated. I just don't varmit hunt anymore. I would use this SS for large game from Whitetail Deer, Black Bear, Wild Boar, on up to Elk/Moose. Mostly it would be used in the Adirondack Mtns of NY State where Bear and Deer are on the agenda and the shooting is fast in that dense forest. One shot is all you'll get. Or in Canada for Moose/Caribou. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and I do like the classics, so let's have fun with this. Thanks....RW

375 Flanged Magnum

Range of bullet weights, Flat enough shooting,
Heavy enough hitting and a classic as well.

375H&H could also be done.

375 H&H, what else. This is the all-arounder for everything in NA. The 375 is also great with cast loads too.

.375 H&H or .300 H&H.

Since Ruger chambers the .375 H&H in the No. 1, I wouldn't go to the trouble of rebarreling your rifle unless you just wanted to. A No. 1 in .300 H&H would be very cool.

Sell the 22-250 and then buy the 375 in a No.1.

How about 30-40 or 7x57R ?Every body always says 375 every time a#1 comes up. Does anybody know the aproximate number Ruger makes of each caliber...

I originally was thinking about a 30/40 Krag or 30/40 Improved since my oldest daughter has liberated my Savage 99 in 308 Win. But lately I have been thinking of having an octagon barrel installed with a sight rib and a QD scope mount/rings setup. May be cost prohibitive but am going to look into it. Since Doug Turnbull and I grew up and still live in the same town I will have him case color the receiver at the very least. The only item is to come up with a caliber to use from Deer/Black Bear up to Elk/Moose. The 375 H&H may get the nod but still researching that. Can anyone here tell me how it works on Whitetail/Mule Deer size game and what bullet there using? The only reason I haven't gone with a 405 Win is lack of trajectary for shots on game like Caribou. All and all I don't really need to get much more than 250 yards out of the cartridge as the stalking makes the hunt for me. All your comments are greatly appreciated....RW

Why not be bold and chamber it for a 9.3x74r? It's a fabulous caliber, traditional in single shots and double rifles, and fun as the dickens to shoot. You will like the cartridge length - longer than a .375 H&H. Looks great on a cartridge belt. Really smacks the game. Not bad recoil. Do it!

Ravenwolf

A whole lot of guys are using the 260 gr bullet for deer hunting and are fairly successful. I'd rather use a good cast flatnose bullet for deer ever since I saw a mulie rolled end over end a few years ago. I was still lugging an 06 while my partner decided to use his 375 with cast bullets. His favorite bullet was a 320 as cast bullet that had the same POI as his 300 gr JSP. His shot was just over 200 yds, which I thought was a long shot with a cast load at that time. The thing was, he practiced with the thing every weekend to make that shot. If you don't like cast bullets, you can always use a 270 gr JSP for a slightly flatter trajectory.

I'll do something technically illegal since I already voted...and vote again for the .375 H&H.

For North American game up to Elk, I think something like the 30-40 Krag is an excellent idea. Another would be 7x75R (Vom Hofe). Of course the 300 H&H would be nice, too.

Then another idea would be 7.5 Swiss. Pick up a copy of "Cartridges of the World" and put your feet up. This could get interesting!

Keep the cartridge ideas coming folks. At the very least I'm having fun looking up info on these fine cartridges. Right now I'm still hung up on the 30-40 and the 375 H&H, that is till someone through in the 9.3X74R. I could toss it all and just go with the 30-06 and be done with it, but what's the fun in that....RW

Of course you could get a No.1 in 30-06 and be just fine...

But we don't want to do that, so what about
318 Westley Richards
333 Jeffery
350 Rigby
7mm Mashburn
275 H&H
405 Win
Wildcat a 7.62x68

Well, here is a highly modified #1 with a sidelever and an indication of fun hunting even if it isn't NA. Five one shot kill in Namibia and 10 head of deer and pronghorn in Montana. It's a .30-40, all handloads with Nosler 180 Partisions.

If you would consider a wildcat, take a look at 338x74R, which was created by Elmer Keith. It is the 9,3x74R case necked down to .338, and is roughly equal to .338 magnum.

338X74R,
I've heard of this wildcat a few times. Where can I find more info on it. It seems similar to the 7.62 Meacham but in .338 cal. Thanks..RW

I found the info in some "Gun notes" articles by Keith, and in a norwegian reloading manual. I will send you the references and some data when I get back home at the end of July.

Capt Curl has given excellent advice. I have done quite a bit of hunting with a 9,3x74R double rifle. It is an excellent calibre.Use 286 grain bullets for big game and all game up close [I have taken game to 300 yards with 286 grain bullets]. You can use 232 to 250 grain bullets for smaller game [deer sized] at a distance.
Go to a gun store and "heft" a 375 No1 then "heft" 1-A in 30-06. I would build my 9,3x74R No1 to the size and weight of a No1 1A. I might make mine with a 24 or 26" bbl.My 9,3 double weighs 7 1/4 lbs without scope, recoil is not bad.
It is my favorite rifle under 40 calibre.
The 9,3x74R is a great hunting cartridge.

NE450, what loads are you using and what velocities are you getting? I just did some research on the 9.3X74R and it seems to be almost on par with the 9.3X62. I've a friend that has a Mauser 98 made up in the 9.3X62 and it sure seems very effective...RW
