Looks like a good price. I have the same model, different calibres. The scope and the mounts are a bonus because they cost a fortune to get fitted.

Looks good to me!!! I have a Meffert in the same chamberings and I can't imagine you'll be displeased with them. Simpson's is good to deal with and, I have to agree with mchughcb about the scope and rings. If you are the one who has it on hold I would say well done!

9,3x72R is, despite the bullets diameter, quite low powered caliber. Good, for example, for roe deer.

Not familiar with roe deer as never hunted them. Would you say it would work on game up to 200-300 lb with a lighter bone structure? I do have a 9.3x57 so how does it compare to that? As far as the rifle caliber is concerned I would like the capability of a 200-250 yard window for game up to our large deer here in the US.

Well I did a little googlefoo and answered my question lol. Apparently ballistics are showing a round similar to the 30-30 and .35 Rem. Still not bad for a brush gun here

I believe that Sauer & Sohn Drillings are among the best quality for that money. If possible, make sure that the claw mount is OK, which means perfect. Otherwise it will be bloody expensive to fix it, besides few gunsmiths are able to make a perfect claw mount these days. Just my opinion.

what's a "fixer upper"?
Here's my opinion:
The Sauer drilling appears to be in good condition and ready to be taken hunting:
7x57 R cartridges are available, ballistics are still modern, I'd say perfect for your whitetail deer.
Shotshells will be 70 mm / 2 3/4 inch.
Everything up to modern standards.
Good scope.
I can't comment on US prices, but this appears to be quite right, of course provided there are no faults in the gun, scope, claw mounts - better to have it checked by somebody who is knowledgeable.

The other drilling comes from the blackpowder to nitro transition period.
Maybe nitro proofed, maybe not.
Lots of questions...
At best a "labor of love" to have it in usable condition, at worst a wallhanger.
In terms of usefulness and in comparison to the Sauer drilling, never worth the price that is asked for.

I recently had an opportunity to check out a drilling similar to the one pictured. Many of those drillings that Simpson is bringing in are virtually new condition and tend to be very accurate. The downside is that they tend to be pretty heavy even without the scope (nearly 8#)so decent as a rifle and not quite as decent as a shotgun.
Not great for quail but not bad for turkey or pheasants over dogs

You certainly won't lose money on the deal for that price especially with an unfooled with drilling.

For ammo try to find S&B 173gr (?) Cutted point ammo. I have a couple 7mmR drillings and it tends to shoot better than my handloads, and RST 1oz loads http://www.rstshells.com/
with fiber wads.

Far be it for me to be an expert but I did use drillings when hunting in Germany in the early 80's. As Tom H has mentioned they are not ideally balanced as a shotgun but the shot barrels are usually used for small ground animals, foxes, badgers, hares, etc. and roosting birds or those on the ground, crow, black cock and capercaillie, not so much for flying birds.
That is how I saw drillings used and used them myself, got a couple of Roe deer one morning with a 16G/16G/7x65R drilling.

A lot of these are coming onto the market from germany. A lot of their hunting for boar is done from highseats at night under the moon and they are all using the latest generation of 56mm zooms from Zeiss, Swarovski etc. They are inundated with boar and pressure is on to shoot numbers. With these old drillings the cost of having new rings fitted to take a new scope is several hundred Euro so they are trading these in for the latest Blaser R8s all fitted with big scopes.

That looks a nice drilling. Those Nickel scopes are good but the reticle will move as its adjusted and field of view will not be as wide as modern scope. I have an old Nickel 1-4x20 scope and even at 1x, my swaro Habicht 4-12x50 has a wider field of view at 4x than it does.

7x57r will do everything that the 7x57 will do. Most ammo is loaded to slightly lower pressures so it's probably 20 yards less effective - i.e. It will perform at 80 like a 7x57 will at 100 - in othersclose enough that it's not important. 7x57 is a very efficient deer cartridge that will also perform well on other game given the correct bullet and bullet placement.
