Farquharson education please?
      #182686 - 28/05/11 12:48 PM

Hello All,

I am the proud new owner of a fine old Farquharson rifle marked "J Burrow Maker 116 Fishergate Preston" It is chambered in 375 flanged Nitro Express 2 1/2, has tang safety, Krupp steel barrel.

I have ordered "British Single Shot Rifles v3" but I'm an impatient fella.....

What can you tell me?

Thanks

Mark

It's a long and slippery slope you're on...

Will wait for the experts to chime in on your rifle, but what I can tell you is that you're one lucky devil! Congratulations!

Thanks for sharing pics of your rifle and good hunting!

Appears to be a late moderl P.D.(public domain) action. Read Wal's book and go from there.

Mark:

I can tell you that I am envious...

You have what is a "trade" Farquharson which appears to be in excellent condition. It looks to be a very nice rifle. It is of the coveted later tang safety variety and is chambered for a nice cartridge. The action was, as were apparently all the Farquharson actions except the Gibbs, made in Belgium. The rifle was probably made by one of the big British houses and provided to Burrow in some state from a barreled action to a complete rifle, or anywhere in between.

You will find a wealth of information in Mr. Winfer's book. Enjoy your new toy and don't be afraid to shoot it. That is what the maker made it for.

Best regards,

Glenn

Mark,
Glenn and Kamilaroi are right! Once you get the book, you will be a real Farq. fan!
Yours is what is called in the book, a 3B action.
I have one very similar to yours which was originally a 450/400.
I would be interested to know if your action has a number stamped on the front. Say, a 450 or a 500.
If it does, that denotes the caliber size which was thought to be the max for the action and when placed next to an earlier action like a Jeffery, you can better appreciate the "bigness" of the 3B.
I would suggest a quick disassembly and check. Many of these guns have had repairs and replacement parts of questionable quality over the decades, but I must say, your gun looks to be fairly unmessed with!
Once you get the book, and grind some proper screwdrivers, you will see how service friendly the PD Farquharson really is!
Congrats!

"grind some proper" being the optimum words.

Your screws are very good indeed, try to keep the "butchers away from the gun unless they have the correct sized tools to work on it.

Too many good clean guns have one or more buggered screws that let them down.

Good pick up. Well done.

Mark,
You sure understated her at the gun show this morning. She's an absolute beauty, even tho she does have "only one barrel"!

Best,
Ron.

Oh damn! I've been standing on the edge of the Farquharson abyss for some time just waiting to take a leap.

Congratulations!
