Ben,

I believe ambient light makes a difference with those entry level chronos. A bright day will give different readings to an overcast day. It's nice to know what velocity your getting but the only way to determine trajectory is to shoot over known distances and observe and record the 'fall of shot' for yourself.

It certainly adds another dimension to reloading

John M is right on this one as well.

To check my Chrony I put a couple of 22lr's over it first.

I have a "red" Chrony,my mate has a "green" chrony as well as an Ohler.

We lined the three up (end to end) and you would be surprised have close the three were.Less than 25 fps between them.

It is nice to know your velocity but not that important as you found.

I just use it to say "I want 2250 fps out of my 404" or "3000 fps out of my 8x68s".

There must have been some lies around before Chrony's were readily available.

Yes, we found that once the sun is in the treeline, it wouldn't work. Even a few shadows interfered, and our best results were when we took the plastic canopy off.

Another interesting thing: Two weeks ago when we first tried it, my mate tested some 6.5x55 loads. This time, the same load tested almost 200fps faster. I think last time was maybe five or six degrees cooler. Does temperature make that much difference, or is something whacky somewhere? Unfortunately, I didn't bring the .416 Rigby out again to try yesterday, but when we used it that first time, its reading was a very satisfying 2350fps. Are some cartridges affected more by warmth?

For me, it is purely interesting to find-out. I very much doubt I will change anything on my .450/.400, as with solids or Hydros, it shoots through buffalo and bulls. And having used the .300H&H happily, I doubt I will pursue 3000fps with it, either.

Bro and I call our chronographs, "Lie Detectors".

Bought my first, a Model 12 Oehler in 1977. I've had a chronograph ever since. Used the Oehler until about '82 or .83, then bought a Pact Timer- still have that one and check my Chrony Beta master with it. They are usually within 5fps, whcih is amazing for a chronograph that's screens are so close (chrony). I've always used the 4' spacing on the Pact.

I was taught in the army to always try and NOT leave your rounds out in direct sunlight for longer than possible. Try and keep them at least shaded even if it is only with a hat. If it was good enough for them then it was good enough for me.

I believe some powders are more susceptable to heat than others. Marketing tells me ADI powders less than others.

NEVER leave rounds on a dashboard during daylight.

EDIT: Dead is dead in my book. Another 100-200 fps is not going to make any difference.

Yes, absolutely. These rounds weren't left in the heat. They were in the shade.

I've had issue 7.62x51 Nato ammo blow primers - drop out upon extraction from my match rifle - the ammo box was sitting in the sun on the pad, lid partially closed. Sun peeking in one side was enough to boost it well over safe.

The Hodgdon Extreme powders work well for me in heat and cold. For example, H4895 (ADI2206H?) gives me within 20fps. from +80F down to -10F. I was happy with that. I expected 100fps or more drop, like I get with Hodgdon's Lil'Gun in the .218Bee. I guess they didn't lie - about the Extreme's being temp stable. Too - ammo loaded up hot (high prssure) in the winter with that powder and Varget, didn't react any differently when shot in the summer.

Ben, just got done reading all three pages. Congrats on a beautiful gun in an awesome caliber. I'd have loved to had it on my DG hunt, in Zimbabwe, last month. Our 375 H&H mag ruger no. 1s were great, but it would have been ultra cool to have done it with a 450/400 NE 3". But I told you that before. Gorgeous pics!

Pretty good photo's as far as I am concerned, nice rifle too, I like Ruger especially No1's. Mine are 1B in 30-06 and 1H in 375H&H Mag.

This is my .450/400 project and it's coming together.Refitted a better pad and an oversize rear sight,to be filed in.The trigger is at 3.5 lbs.I have not decided on the scope yet,but I do have a nice 3X Leupold on stand-by.

He does a good job,my photo's aren't the best,but he does a good job rounding out the edges and polishing the pad.
